strelnik Posted March 16, 2017 Report Posted March 16, 2017 Hello fellow Volvoites, I am looking for the tool used to compress the Volvo hydraulic tensioner cylinder used on 800-900 series cars. Yes I know a vise can be used, but I don't know some things that interest me: - How fast to compress the tensioner when using the tool or a vise. "Slowly" and "in stages" are relative terms. - Where/how to buy the original tool which is "expensive" but no price mentioned. I don't even know what the thing looks like. - These units may be rebuildable using the right kind of O-rings and LHM, I'm betting. - One fellow member named bay13 once mentioned the tool but have no way to contact this member. Anyone got the tool, and want to sell? Does the tool have a part number? The dealers are clueless here. Thanks! Have done two Volvo engine front ends (timing belt etc) - one 960, one 850-- still have one to do, waiting for better weather.
Volvo5.0 Posted March 16, 2017 Report Posted March 16, 2017 Part number for the tool is 9995456. I have one and still end up using the vise, since it is right on my workbench, when compressing the tensioner. When using the vise I just go slowly in stages. The last cars to use hydraulic tensioners are at least 20 years old now, so probably wouldn't be a bad idea to just replace the tensioner anyway. Already compressed and ready to install!
Fudge_Brownie Posted March 16, 2017 Report Posted March 16, 2017 You don't even need a vice. I compress it with a C-clamp. Crank till it's decently hand tight, wait 5-10 seconds, and you'll feel the resistance is gone and you can spin another half turn or so. Repeat until compressed. I usually develop a rhythm by feel as to how quickly I feel comfortable advancing it. If you're still dead set on the tool, now that you have a P/N, someone like Tasca or FCP come to mind. You may have to call, as it might not be listed on their site. But there's a reason you probably haven't found much info about it here. I don't think anyone uses them except shops or dealer techs who have access to specialty tools. In rare cases, there are tools that might be worth the money. Subframe bushing tool comes to mind. I don't think this is one of them.

strelnik Posted March 18, 2017 Author Report Posted March 18, 2017 Thanks to everyone for showing me this. I will now make a simpler one of these that people can make at home without welding. I enjoy making tools like this. Have made many, more complex ones for Citroens.
