Finally had a chance to take some decent pics this afternoon and figure out what we actually have to work with here.

Goodbye dirty Perfos......with Continental ControlContact TourAS thumb_down.gif thumb_down.gif. Could not get rid of these things fast enough. I took on an exit ramp at like maybe 0.5g on the trip to get the door for my R and was very disturbed to hear that this was almost understeer city. Also, they have no grip, are loud, have no grip, ride harsh, and have no grip.

Hello Volans with Nokian zLine AS! Hopefully these will be a lot better. Can't wait to feel how they do on a car with stock suspension.

Mmmmmm......Karelian birch....

TAN leather wheel in not awful shape. thumbup.gif I have a feeling this might clean up pretty well.

Driver's seat is gonna need a little bit of work.

And so is the passenger seat:

Back seats need some cleaning up:

And definitely some conditioning.

WAIT WHAT?!? eek.gif And yes the wires definitely look like they are hooked up. Need to try these out when it's not 80 outside. Is this the only known x70 in the US market to have heated rear seats aside from the Boston Coach V70s?

Something scratched up this whole side of the car. It looks 10x worse in person but I think there's still a pretty good chance it'll buff out.

Ouch.

This roof is totally fµcked in this corner......this also looks 100x worse in person. Anyone have thoughts on whether this is something a good PDR guy could help? Hopefully there is something short of replacing the roof (yes that is possible, I've seen it done) that can help this since I really don't think my dad wants to get into all that.

Rear bumper obviously needs a respray and we'll see if this tailgate can be saved when we finally get around to dealing with that. And he needs a "T" for the T5 badge.

Engine bay doesn't look too bad

Wow those bumper brackets look mint! West coast car FTW.

And there you go......434-21.

35736226031_7d69720247_h.jpg

So, let's see, what do we have here? A '98 V70 T5 SE with crazy options, cool history, reasonable miles, seemingly great shape mechanically, but a little rough around the edges cosmetically and in need of a little optimization. Seems like pretty reasonable value at $2k.

Also of note is that my dad was getting in the mid 33s on the trip computer for most of the drive home and was getting 35+ for the last portion from CT to home. I have my suspicions that those numbers may be a bit optimistic, but he definitely had significantly lower fuel consumption than I did. He actually thought he had enough gas to make it home when I was almost out in Western CT, and we started both of these tanks just north of Lexington, VA, 636 miles from home.

Yeah I can promise you he wasn't getting 10+ MPG over what Volvo said the car would do.  Its a shame the previous owner couldn't love the car like your dad will.

Acquired a T form one of the guys on SS.  My dad is thinking about picking up an SE badge off ebay, too.

Lol I hear ya.  I may have to hijack this thing for Carlisle next year.  It's a good thing someone else bought it before I did, though, because I really don't have time/$/want/use for another turbo P80 right now......if ever.  The two I have keep me plenty busy as it is!

I am skeptical as well, but the trip computer and fuel gauge both seemed to be in agreement about what was going on.  All of that stuff could easily be wrong though.  We'll see; definitely need to do some hand calcs and compare to reality.  It's also possible that this car came with the special tune that some of the press cars had, given what appears to be its history with Volvo.  From what I hear there are some tunes out there that have AFRs as high as 16:1 at light load, which would definitely result in higher fuel economy than normal.

I suspect the second owner was the problem.  The guy my dad got it from (3rd owner) brought it from Oregon to New Orleans and just finished restoring an S60R.  People who don't care don't usually go to that kind of effort.  I suspect he didn't feel like doing another restoration and so he got rid of this and a 2000 S70 GLT SE that he had.

I actually had 2 parts cars that had rear heated seats.

Wasn't at least one of those one of the Boston Coach V70s?  Seems like I remember someone on one of the forums parting one of those out at some point.

Man that thing looks awesome! Super rare, glad it went to a good home. Interior doesn't look too bad, especially the console. A good vacuuming and leather clean/conditioning should bring things back quite a bit. Didn't realize it had the heated rear seats, that's uber cool! My coworker installed OEM equipment for them in his S70 AWD and it's still something I may consider on my yellow

Curious to see if there are any birch shift knobs out there

Justin had one in his C70 until he installed those skulls.  He had the steering wheel too iirc.

My usual photo spots near my house are always jammed during the summer so I decided to try a new spot to get some decent shots of it on the Volans with zLines. Should have stopped it down a little more so you could see the Boston skyline and the windmill that is 100 yards from my typical photo spot.

Only have like 50 miles on the zLines so far so I'm not pushing them at all yet but initial impressions are pretty good. Need to see what springs this car has in it because this setup doesn't feel quite as nice over larger imperfections as my T-5R does. It does seem to cope better with very small imperfections and less ideal road surfaces, but I suspect that may have more to do with the rubber subframe bushings than anything else. We took it over our favorite akward road surface transition yesterday and it didn't feel quite as planted as my T-5R does.....not sure what that's about yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got started on the paint restoration this afternoon.

^That's not a good look.

Much better:

Starting to make this car great again. Looks like it's going to need some new panels though. I'm losing confidence that this passenger rear door is salvageable, and the paint on the hood looks beyond help, too. Still don't have a plan for this quarter panel or the roof. And then of course there's still the tailgate and bumpers to do something about.

I've also seen a handful of V/XC70's with heated rear seats over the years. Certainly a very cool option!

I see them every other year or so at the junkyards. But I don't go that often.

Given the history and the way everything else is spec'd out, we're pretty sure everything in the interior is original.  I'm not aware of another set of V70 SE seats in North America.

Yes, MY98 so comes with m4.4. My dad has been driving a manual 1999 V70 NA for the last 7 years so he is used to how the ME7 cars drive and likes it much better than the way my 850s drive (aside from the turbo part lol).  If he still doesn't like it after we get this car home and he starts driving a m4.x car on a more regular basis, we're gonna get rid of all that and put ME7 this thing.

Aren't the NA cars Denso? Or is that only the older 850s?
