Responding to this thread that was archived.. I was getting sh** for claiming drivers in my area are among the worst I've seen..

So here's a bit more data for my argument..      Obviously have to take all this with a grain of salt; i.e. don't get too excited.

Huge flaw in this is that they're using speeding tickets as an indicator of good or bad driving. Worse, they separate it from citations like running a red light. And don't tell us how they're weighting it all, unless they're saying they weight it all equally. And they should be ranking it on per-mile driven, but I don't see any indication of that.

It's funny to see Providence #2 best, while Boston is #19 worst, since most people I know would have guessed the opposite. Boston has an infamous reputation nationally but most people from the area don't consider it bad, just aggressive.

Funny you mention aggressive drivers are considered "bad".  I don't know about that..  I've lived in both SanDiego (5th worst) and Detroit metro area (supposedly best) in the recent past.  I would say motown/motorcity drivers are very aggressive and rude, but skill-wise and when it comes to knowing the laws/rules, I would rate them quite high.  I'd rather drive in Detroit than a lot of places, but then, you're in Detroit...

IMO west coast drivers in general are lazy; they'd rather be on their phone than driving.  Self driving cars will be good for about 80% of them..  :glare:

Do you mean we agree that aggressive doesn't imply bad? I think so, and it's a little counter-intuitive.

It also ties in to your latter point about 'lazy' drivers. I have a theory that because our cars and roads are all pretty good now, while we continue to tolerate many bad driving habits while still demonizing speed alone, people become bored and unengaged. The mildly aggressive (assertive?) drivers stay engaged in the act of driving, but generally don't cause any additional risk to anyone.

I agree.   I'd absolutely rather drive with GOOD agressive drivers than mediocre "lazy" drivers.  I hate driving in Boston because we have these like pseudo-aggressive drivers here.  They love to fantasize about being aggressive but very few of them actually have the balls to be aggressive......which makes them very unpredictable.  I'd 10/10 rather drive in a place like NYC where the drivers really are aggressive, which makes them quite predictable and easy to deal with once you understand the patterns.

Chicago is absolutely hands down the worst place I've ever been in a car in......not a fan of driving in Providence or Orlando either lol.
