Rough clutch pedal

Recommended Posts

Recently noticed that my car's clutch pedal would feel "rough" or "scratchy" when depressed but it doesn't seem to affect the quality of shifting gears. The clutch pedal feels normal during the first 15-20 minutes of driving then would start to feel "rough" until the car is turned off.

I just replaced the tranny fluid this weekend with Redline MTL 75W-80 which I have always used in the factory M59 tranny. Wondering if this could be related? Any ideas on what to check?

Thanks.

A new R clutch was installed less than 25,000 kms ago. I don't drive the car hard so I didn't think the clutch would be worn this soon.

Thanks TryingBe for responding to my questions posted here and MVS.

I just checked the clutch slave cylinder and master brake cylinder and there's no leak on them nor on the hard lines.

The weird thing is that the roughness isn't there when starting up from a cold engine, but after about 15-20 minutes it starts to surface. The feel is best described as "squeaky". Wondering if this is heat-related - perhaps some of the rubber bushings in the cable assemblies is affected by the heat given the age of the bushings.

Please don't take offense, but I've read this post a few times now, and I cannot visualize what you're talking about.

My best guess is maybe something like this:  With the engine running and in neutral, you push in the clutch pedal just enough to take up the slack, but not enough to disengage the clutch; does it feel like the clutch pedal is modulating in and out slightly?  Does the frequency of this modulation increase with engine speed?  If that's the case, then your clutch pressure plate is starting to come apart.

If that's not it, please try again to describe your symptoms.

gdog, no offense taken. The squeaky pedal feel happens even with the engine off but still warm. When the engine cools off overnight, the pedal feel goes back to normal. Since a running engine has been factored-out, I suspect it is heat-related.

Thanks!

Is the issue just a "squeaky" pedal, or "rough" in its travel excursion?  And if the latter, is it only "rough" once the pedal starts to compress the pressure plate, or through its whole travel (all the way up,  to down to the floor)?

Never seen heat affect the hydraulics or mechanical linkage, but suppose it's possible.  Assume you already tried spray grease on the mechanical points in the linkage?

I think it's more of a "squeaky" feeling pedal and happens while the pedal is being depressed and not during pedal retraction. This is only felt at the pedal, not in the feel of the engine shifting gears.

I've haven't sprayed grease on the linkage but will try that.

Thanks!

I've checked out Geevs' car and my pedal feels exactly the same once warmed up. Smooth when it's cold, then has this kind of bumpiness when depressing the pedal once everything is warmed up. My pedal didn't feel like this until a week or two after I finished my manual swap. I don't find it noticeable while driving the car
