turbo bob
Hey guys, I have a 2000 V70R with a factory manifold and wanted to ask if it is worth swapping to one of the "japanafold" manifolds and does it really provide that much better performance or is it marginal/negligible? Currently have my motor out on a stand replacing all the seals and gaskets and trying to decide if its worth getting one of the japan manifolds to swap on while everything is apart... German850R
Actually you should already have the Japanifold ;)
turbo bob
That's where I am getting confused... I have 2 motors in the garage right now, both are fully assembled 2000 V70R motors, and referencing the pic I am attaching, both of my motors have exhaust manifolds which resemble the middle and right manifolds, and I thought the one on the left is the japanifold that they normally come with?? gmsgltr
far left is the "R Manifold"
Volvo5.0
Middle one (with Japan stamped on it) is the Japanifold. Ha!
RBoy8
I think the Japanifold (combined with a full 3" turboback of course) is worth it for the sound alone.
bmdubya1198
I've been considering the same for my 2000 R. From what I read on here somewhere though, it should already have a japanifold. I've been meaning to check, but I'm just too damn lazy to pull off the heat shield and look. I can tell you for sure that it sounds way better than a stock T5 or GLT with its deeper burble. But maybe that's just the dual exhaust.
bmdubya1198
Just checked my 2000 VR, and it does NOT have a Japanifold.

It was hard to get my phone back there, otherwise I would have snapped a pic. From what I could see, it has the two lines on the top and bottom runners like the standard manifold, and no words or part number stamped on it anywhere. It also had those two vertical lines you can see in the picture here http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/169486-japanifold-vs-r-manifold-revisited/
turbo bob
I've noticed the same thing so far... The 2000 R replacement motor I bought as a complete long block and trans with harness, injectors, manifolds and turbo etc, I tore everything down to just the block and head to reseal everything before swapping it into the car, and it has a normal manifold that does not have Japan markings on it. Once I hear out my original motor I'll be able to check which one it has as well but this might look like 2 for 2 2000 Rs neither with a japanafold
adamdrives
Is there a consensus that Japanifold gives the best sound? Just picked up an R mani and for the power level I'm shooting for I'd rather have a nice burble than a few extra hp.
andyb5
The R manifold will sound different than the early style/Japanifold. The difference comes from the change in runner routing
