Wagon Tailgate refuse to close sometimes, especially in cold winter days

My 1995 wagon tailgate refused to close/lock sometimes but exhibited more in cold winter days in New England.  I have to slam the tailgate a few times to close/lock the tailgate.  Could it be the lock itself or time to get a new tailgate lock ?

Had this same issue when I bought my V70. After changing the latch 3 times, I realized that there was a plastic part missing on the catch that is mounted to the floor. Without the plastic part (which breaks off sometimes), the latch will not close all the way. Luckily they are cheap from FCP.

I see, thank you.  I just check, and my plastic part is still there, maybe, it is not as thick as new.

You could definitely have a defective latch. I've seen several fail. You could try lubricating the assembly until you find a new one. It might extend the lifespan a little
