man... I have a computer that I wouldn't mind brutalizing for this project, just the thought of having to pay someone 1k to do it for me kinda turns me off. I guess it is time to do some research if I really wanna do it. You guys know if it is possible to pick up radio stations w/ the carputer though? that is the only real problem that I can see. AM is pretty important when decideding which tunnel to take into NYC. Great to see that someone has the rocks to tear into that stuff like that. Again, mad props.

nice work man. i actually plan to put my old powerbook to work in this way and i'm making a custom case for the logic board and drives so that it should fit in the glove box area. that way i could use the combo drive for cd's and dvd's.

i'm curious to know how you've set it up to sleep while the car is off. i know the common way for carputers is to use a sort of hardwired voltage switch with some firmware or something. i haven't seen anything out there that looked like it would work on a powerbook though.

i was going to have it set up to restart after a power failure, and take the battery out. that way it'd power up with the car and when the car turned off it'd lose power. i've got my boot time down to 30sec or so but waking it from sleep is a lot faster and a lot better for the file system then getting the plug pulled once or twice a day. :P

i've also thought about putting the laptop's power switch in the dash. that would allow for the computer to be shut down before the car, but it'd still mean waiting. i'd like something automatic. i've tried to write an apple script to shutdown or sleep it when it had to run on battery power only, but i'm new to applescript and haven't found a way to make that work.

anyway any info you could give us diy guys would be greatly appreciated. some of us (college students) just don't have that kinda cash.

thanks!

also a little note: shut*it*down = beat it off

now which mod set that up? that's just silly...

i must admit, my friend did a bit of mastergenious here... he added a relay to the circuit for the magnetic sensor that detects if the lid is open or closed, so, when the car powers off, the computer thinks the lid is closed, and when it powers on, it thinks the lid has been opened...

the other (easier) way to do this would be to wire in an electromagnet that activates when the car is turned off, and place it right over the trackpad (where the sensor is.)

wow that's impressive. makes me want to chop my powerbook off.

what kind of screen is that?

7" Xenarc Touchscreen

that is a sweet idea, and a lot better than the voltage systems used by the other carputers i've seen. i never understood why people didn't use laptops... i guess 'cause of the price. anyways again nice work. we'll see how well mine turns out... eventually.
