Oh update ;)

Its going to be between $3-$400 for the 404 heat treated ones .

just getting final numbers and it looks like phuz will be the seller of them.

Could we clarify if this is a heat treated steel part or a stainless steel part? Our metals guy was a bit confused at the statement because if it is SS you don't normally heat treat a 404 stainless and if it is regular steel the number is apparently usually 4 digits long?

Hi there,

Just to clarify, there are two types of angle gear. One used in the early cars (MT and auto) and then a later stronger type with a completely new collar for the XC90 V8, S60/V70R GT new S80, new V70 and XC60. Please correct that if wrong!

The analysis here is of the original design collar for the early cars and a redesigned part for the early cars which is now stronger with a nitride coating?

Almost, there are three angle gears:

1. 1,000 ft lb uint used since the dawning of time, also used in the 04-07 Rs with the M66 AWD transmission and the 04-05 Rs with the AW55 AWD transmission (and the XC90 2.5T/T6)

2. 1,000 ft lb unit that is internally identical as #1, but with an input shaft that has 4 more teeth. Used exclusivly with the 06-07 Rs with the TF-80SC 6 speed auto

3. 1,500 ft lb unit used in the XC90 V8/3.2 and all the P24 platform cars (2007+ S80, 2008+V70/XC70, 2009+ XC60)

Update: we're at $80 total now, thanks to everyone who has donated, if you still feel like chipping in, FEO has spent $190 on the last two collar gears he has sent me.

Alex, I shipped my used collar gear to you this morning so you should get it within 9 business days. I'm also willing to chip in $15 to offset past/future collar purchasing expenses, just let me know where to send the money.

Cheers,

Jeff

thanks for the clarification.

there is a thread at swedespeed (a few!) discussing the angle gear. The one here

http://forums.swedespeed,com/zerothread?id=113558

seems to be closest to your discussion here about upgraded parts.

I guess the question now is, is the redesigned collar (type 1 and 2 or just 1?) better than the original?

Does the nitride coating resolve the concern or is the base material still a concern? Would volvo have launched the replacement part if it didnt.

Whilst durability testing would have been conducted on the original design, it seems real world conditions are worse and not accurately represented by the test programme. I suppose the testing procedure was upgraded for the new parts as well.

Further, what is angle gear 3 made from which seems immune from the problems.

Very interesting to see publically the research done at BAE...usually that'll be internal info at a particular manufacturer.

interesting info, that's for all your insight/help

We really need to wait until we have all the research done, we're waiting on a few other parts to arrive for testing and then we can make an informed recommendation.

The 1,500lb angle gear unit is just a heavier duty unit, bigger gears, bigger case, etc. It is not a direct fit replacement for ours, it only fits the XC90 and P24 platform cars.

This is just a case of a BAE employee who happens to be a materials engineer / microscopist and happens to co-own my V70R taking his old parts into the lab and figuring out what's going wrong. Fortunately BAE Land Systems also designs and researches materials and failures on their tanks and troop carriers there so there are a number of people with specialties in gear sets and transmission design. Quite handy at the moment.

Part number 30787669, the sleeve used on the XC90 V8/3.2, the new S80/V70/XC70 and the 06-07 GT V70Rs has arrived. It will go off to the lab for testing on Tuesday (closed on Monday). Thanks to everyone that has donated to make this possible!
