P2 AWD "Collar" gear analysis

I lost AWD function on my '05VR at 76,9000 miles; I assume he collar gear/spline broke.

I'm willing to fit a 30783419 (D5 part) if there is a chance it will live a bit longer.

I ordered the part today, should have it Friday.

For the record, I'm the second owner, I've never lit up the tires on this car and drive it hard but not abusively. I assume the same of the first owner as he did not seem like the burnout type.

I can send the part back no problem.

What is the correct part number for the collar I want?

I'm reasonably sure it is the collar due to the weird cracking/crunching noises I was getting prior to failure. Sort of like a bad CV joint/axle getting ready to go bad.

30787669 is the current part for the R *edit* 31256008 is current and replaces 91814008. (Thanks blot) (actually, for all P2 Volvos with 5 speed autos or 6 speed manuals and AWD) this is the nitride coated part. It should wear better than the original part. So far I have not been able to get anyone to send me a failed nitrieded part for testing, hopefully we will have one soon to compare the wear characteristics.

thanks for the info., I just ordered P/N 30787669.

I'll compare the 2 for sizes, and return the D5 piece after.

I thought 30787669 is only for the following:

2006-2007 V70R/S60R with the 6 speed TFSC80 Automatic

XC90 V8/3.2L

2007+ S80

2008+ V70/XC70

31256008 which replaces 9181408 is a direct fit for: all P2 AWD vehicles except the ones listed above.

30783419 is for D5

I just called Boston Volvo, they said the same as "blot"; 31256008 is current and replaces 91814008.

Is this the 2nd generation part I want?

Blot and you are correct, 31256008 is current and replaces 91814008. I think I need to check what was in the tea I was drinking yesterday! Yikes! I'll edit my post to prevent future confusion.

No worries! Just checking your six. Your research efforts have been exceptional and came at the right time for me.

My car is in for a front diff upgrade to a Quaife torsen diff and I realised that it was timely for a collar change as well. I have been lucky so far with all the track sessions and mileage put on the car over 5 1/2 years (75K miles), the splines were just about gone from the collar. The OEM open diff splines showed a bit of wear as well.

Apologies for the poor quality pics from my handphone...

worn collar gear teeth 9181408

DSC00184.jpg

very little depth remaining on the collar gear teeth. the teeth feel very sharp to the touch.

the slight wear on the OEM open diff teeth.

new Quaife diff - note the difference bet the worn teeth from the oem diff.

Still waiting for my shipment of a new collar gear 31256008.

I could mail you the old collar, but the diff will cost a bit to ship due to the weight.... does anyone have a regular shipment from Singapore to US that the diff can hitch a ride on? I have no real use for the old diff and I doubt that anyone would want to buy a 2nd hand tracked diff although it is still in pretty good shape.

No Worries!! This thread has been great so far!!

Just ordered the 31256008 from 128 Volvo, they will take the other parts back.

I'll have it Monday, will swap parts soon thereafter.

While I have all 3 collars in hand, I'll measure and take pix...

Maybe NA have different P/N then Europe?

I got other P/N 9495034 Part name SLEEVE. that made in japan.

Is it "Collar" or not?

That is the collar for the 5 speed automatic transmission. The collars being discussed here are mostly associated with the M66 AWD transmission.

There was no change to the part used on tha AW55 5 speed automatic tramsmission, although it is my understanding this part is functionally similar to the one used on the M66. The AW55 does not put nearly as much stress on the collar due to the torque limiting on in gears 1-3. The D5 part is unique to the 08+ D5 models with the M66.

clear. I tuned my 2005GT and take off the torque limited. so I hope the new parts can service longer time.
