Do you have a desoldering station? What brand?

Also, do you have any experience soldering on ICs? They are ususlaly cold soldered or infrared soldered. This is more difficult than the "I solder wires when installing stereo eqipment" type soldering. Trust me, if you've never soldered in intercooler stuff it will have you cussing in no time. Especially when you burn the pads on a $1k+ ECU.

Don't I know... lol I used to do mod chips like crazy for ps and xbox's some of the connectors are a whore to get at with a convential sollder pencil

Anyways, I'm glad you guys are taking on this project... I just don't see any of my skills being any help here. I have very basic progamming skills. Basically pascal form high school lol. But if you need someone to datalog all the ecu sensors ect during a normal drive I can certainly do this.

Now anyone got any software for the OBD2 datalogging? I don't think my cable will hook directly up to my laptop form what I saw. I'll need to get a new cable....

bump bumpbump...  whats going on fellas

I've got a 072 ECU in my hands now (thanks Ludman) and I'm beginning to do a little circuit tracing and reading through the 531 datasheet. It's hampered a little by the fact that the only part numbers are inventory control numbers for Bosch. I don't have an example in hand, but, it's a little irritating. Some stuff (like the signal conditioning circuitry) yields pretty easily to functional analysis but the digital logic portions will be a little harder to crack.

As a historical asside does anone know how it was determined that the CPU was the 80531? It has the right number of pins however, the /EA pin is doing something I didn't expect. It's hooked up to a capacitor whose opposite leg is hooked to DGnd. According to the 80531 datasheet it should be grounded directly. I'll need to spend a little more time with the multimeter to make sure there isn't a trace I'm missing.

My first big goal is to figure out the address space so we can do some kind of QC on the disassembled output. It's one thing to wade through 100,000 lines of assembly, its another to discover it's all for naught because A0 and A1 were swapped on the PCB and you missed that

I think it would be interesting if we could get our hands on this machine that can change values on our ECU on the FLY...if it even exists...maybe we can "replicate" it somehow :)

That already exists. Volvo programming tool ala R-Line/R-Tune. How deep are your pockets?

I wonder HOW much? 2,3k? 5k? 10k?
