Put this reference info on SS, figured it's more relevant on here

Note that the vin break listed, even in the '99 slide is a '98 vin break.

The production change here was in regard to the center bearing - later shafts have a larger bearing & carrier.

Note 2 pertains to the fact that the replacement CV ONLY fits original Prop shafts

Wow. Thanks Hussein!

So what happened to this coupling? I'm guessing they aren't meant to be solid with black crud like that and those little tabs are individual wet clutch type disks.

Half the discs are connected to the front shaft, the other half are tied to the rear section (alternating) - there was a silicone base fluid in there, as the discs slip the fluid heats up & progressively locks the discs together, transferring power to the rear.

The failure of this unit was the freewheel mechanism - one of the bearings let loose from it's ramp, and rattled around like a tin can. No way to fix them.

is there any way to change the center bearing of the driveshaft as viewed in the picture with the 3 driveshafts.. even vadis has no part number, and mines worn out due to a "temp fix" that ive been running for a year..

There are sold - however, I don't know how you could get the yoke off to do it, never tried. I think I'd just go reman from coloradodriveshaft at that point - the carrier w/bearing is a couple hundred......

^ Thanks. Just trying to help anyone looking for differences when sourcing parts or contemplating a manual conversion

So, the '00 axle doesn't work in an M66 AWD because it's too short. Fixed point is the bearing, since that is located on the engine in the same location regardless of transmission. This is from a 5 speed Auto AWD ®. If there were any 4 speed Auto AWD in '00, I would expect that it would work as is. The '99 axle will work, but the outer BG seal seat is not in the correct location.

Either a .5mm collar needs to be fabricated for the seal to seat (1mm difference in OD between seal seat & rest of shaft), or a smaller ID (27mm) seal would need to be sourced. Probably easier to look for a seal, IMO

Do you have an axle from a 00 AWD or XC to compare to the 00 R axle?

Those still retained the 4 speed auto's, the only AWD model to get the 5 speed was the 00 R.

Also, this is a great thread, thanks for organizing all this info!

The last two '00 XC's I have worked on were both 5 speeds - I haven't seen a '00 with a 4 speed for comparison.

There are 2 right axles listed for '00:

8251521 (8601580)

8251523 (8601589) this one says '00-, so perhaps the 521 is '00 4 speed auto, which should be a direct fit for the M66 AWD, but I'd need to see one to determine that.

Hm interesting. The "model specifications" list on SS says 00 XCs still had the 4 speed, but it appears that that listing is mistaken. Looking at all the 00 XCs for sale right now, they all have 5 speed auto transmissions.

Just checked further, the The original part number for '00 5 speed AWD axle is 9463921. This number supercedes to this exchange # 8251521 (8601580), so perhaps the 8251523 (8601589) is for the 4 speed. All speculation, without an axle to compare
