Because the kind you are suppose to use depends on your emissions code.

There was no mention of that on the FCP website. :(

Any idea why this other one doesn't work? Different levels of vacuum involved or something?

I have no Idea why a part not made for your car doesn't work.

In the future check for a part number on your part and then give them a call to avoid these problems.  Not all parts people know the right questions to ask.

That's the thing, I ran the part number on my old part through Volvo's computerized part catalogue. It recieved no hits. Then you tell me that the part number changed, and that I have to use the old number for ordering. How was I to know that to begin with?

You arn't, it's not your fault. You are not a technician or a parts person. The tech would have told them the year and model and the "square" evap valve if they tried to give the round one. A good parts counter would ask what the emissions code was. All things that didn't happen here but you can get ahold of them and suggest that in the future they ask for the emissions code so you can get the correct part.

1998 V70 AWD. I have codes 0442 and 0455 (Just got an OBD II code reader last week). Reader indicates small evap leak and "gross" evap leak. I had code 0442 last week, reset it using reader, and this code and the other one returned today. I looked around the carbon canister and could not see any leaks, hoses look OK where I can see them. I have the original gas cap. However, I could not see the EVAP valve mentioned above, so I'm not sure if I have this type of valve or the other type (mentioned in Haynes manual) that sits on top the canister. Can someone tell me type and location of EVAP valve to look for on this vehicle? Also, any other suggestions as to how to locate the evap leak. I'm planning to leave on a 200 mi trip tomorrow to a funeral, back Tuesday night. If this fault likely to cause a larger problem?

holler1, it's not a big problem, take your reader and just clear the codes when they come up. Fix it when you get back. Your evap valve is under the air tube that runs by the inboard part of the battery. You can pull it out and you will see the square Canister purge valve (know as the evap valve) It will have an electricial connection and two hose connections.

I was getting this code every couple days. Went through two gas caps(1 aftermarket, 1 dealer) which didnt solve the problem. So...after posting about the problem on here a few times I was told to vacuum test the ports on the EVAP valve. Which I did with a $40 MITYVAC from pepboys. What I found out was the bottom port on the valve(the one that runs to the rear of the vehicle & connects to the cannister) didnt hold a vacuum. So I cleaned it out with some T/B cleaner & comressed air. Then retested it & held vacuum. In addition, I tested the line that connects to that port by disconnecting it at the cannister, plugging one end & applying the vacuum and that was fine. I also replaced the line that went from the intake manifold to the top port on the valve because the metal clip that holds it to the fan shroud had cut pretty deeply into it after 7 years. So I did this Saturday morning, then drove all over hell & creation the rest of the weekend & the code hasnt come back yet. So hopefully ive fixed it. If not y'all will be the first to know. And I deffinitely didnt mind having to buy the MITYVAC. Im sure it will come in handy through the years as it also came with all the parts to bleed brakes.

Good Luck, Matt

Thanks for the help. I gave the gas cap a few good turns, cleared the codes and drove 280 miles to Dayton and back. The P0455 code came back on at Dayton. When I got back I located the purge valve. However, the purge valve on my 98 V70 AWD is round and has 180 degree hose connections, not square as described for S70 T5. I don't have a vacuum pump so I cleaned it with carb cleaner and put it back on. I reset the code again but it returned next day. The hose below the valve doesn't have a clamp and is not real tight. I'll put on a clamp tomorrow and see if that helps. I suppose the next step is to replace the purge valve, but I want to make sure I get the right one.
