Estate Tax Repeal Passes House

Guys: It's possible that some of you missed this parag in the AP article that Ken linked: "Most estates already are exempt from federal taxes. The Internal Revenue Service said just over 2 percent of people who died in 2001 left estates subject to taxation. "

I'll put that in perspective. My sources are the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, and the IRS.

- In 2003, when only estates valued at $1 million-plus were subject to tax, just 1.5% of estates had to pay estate taxes.

- In 2001, out of 2,363,100 total adult deaths, only 49,911, or 2.1%, had estates large enough to be hit by the tax.

- In 2001 the portion of an estate exempt from taxation was raised from $675,000 (which equals 1/100th of what 850 owners have spent on repairs) to $1.5 million in 2004. In 2006 the exemption goes to $2 mill for individuals and $4 mill for couples.  Time to start looking for that rich young widow..."Marry me and I'll save you $2 million." Which is a much better line than "Come here often?"

- The number of small businesses and farms subject to the estate tax in 2004 was - get this - 300. In 2011 if the 10-yr mods to the 2001 legislation are completed, when only estates valued above $3.5 million are subject to the tax, that total of small biz and farms falls to 50.

I do not disagree with a lot of what some of you have written but I wanted you to have these stats.  By the way the current move to have estate taxes deep sixed  more or less dates to 1992 when heirs to the Mars, Gallo, and Campbell soup fortunes hired the D.C. law firm Patton Boggs to lobby for repeal.

good post Don! This is a tax of the extremely wealthy and one that is under attack from the ULTRA wealthy. Don't forget that 2% of persons raises 290 bil over 10 years.

Thats right Charles I forgot some states are ahead of their time and already did away with the State income tax, isnt florida one of them?  What do you do for a living anyway Charles. I have been curious about that for a while now.

Yes Florida and when I lived in Alaska they had no income tax. Actually Alaska pays you to live there, but thats another story. Oh so the cut only effects 2% of people so why worry? I think you would be more than a little upset if 2% of the population was about to be enslaved. I bet Kerry would have liked an extra 2%. In anycase this tax applies to me and about everyone in my family. Even if it didnt I think I am too far right to approve of it. But I hate the church and anti-abortion crowd.... maybe I am in the middle...

What do I do? Official title is Director of Technical System Development. I basically work the technology side of security for a HLS contractor. Deployment of uninvasive sensors, encryption, monitoring, general system admin/IT, and some communications fall under me. I have some serious geeks in my dept.

Pro-life and proud of it. It's just a thing I have against murdering the innocent.

That's a negative, ghostrider. There is no innocence, only humanity. We're just trying to save the world one dead fetus at a time.

HAHAHAHAH

That was classic. I got it! There should be a federal fetus tax. If your baby dies or is aborted the gov should be able to tax it. Lower and upper class have fetuses. So its fair to all. And if you cannot afford the tax we use the fetus for research.... or conservation pieces. Which ever is needed more. Speaking of babies in jars anyone else been to the medical museum at WRAIR?

Jross and VS Admin must have been out of town at their annual Looking for 4-Leaf Clovers party when the Social Conscience delivery truck arrived.

The opposite of Pro-Life is Pro-Death...oh, I guess that should be "Pro-Abortion". Sorry...certainly don't want to offend such sensitive and caring people.

You know in my perfect world I have enslaved the entire population with absolute prejustice. And all who offend my judgment must fight to the death in the backseat of a pinto.

But atlas this is not the case. So I just have to live with a world where we can kill babies for the low price of $199.99.

To quote the great Bill Hicks:

"I, ah...this abortion issue in the States is dividing the country right in half. You know, and even amongst my friends - we're all highly intelligent - they're totally divided on the issue of abortion. Totally divided. Some of my friends think these pro-life people are just annoying idiots. Other of my friends think these pro-life people are evil monkeys. How are we gonna have a consensus? I'm torn. I try and take the broad view and think of them as evil, annoying monkeys."

(Thanks Charles :P that didn't say "monkeys" originally.)

Oh, that's really sweet. There's also this from Hicks, at his life's end: ""I left in love, in laughter, and in truth, and wherever truth, love and laughter abide, I am there in spirit."

Which do you imagine he'd prefer to be remembered by?
