PLANT Posted June 15, 2015 Report Share Posted June 15, 2015 Hi all,Winter here but only down to 3-4 degrees celsius No error lights or indicators and performance is rock solid....I thought fuel economy is down but fuel price has risen and maybe driving over 100km\h don't help.Living in Australia this is right hand drive car.I noted tonight on garage floor a new Oil\water mark at the RIGHT front, just in from the right front wheel?About the size of a 30cm frypan.....Seems inline with timing belt.....Under the hood what do I need to check?RadiatorBrake line?Which hoses?Water bottle?Engine bay looks like this: http://www.vandsauto...0-19t-2002.html Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Black'ish is oil, clear or green should be antifreeze/coolant, red is tranny, goldish is power steering, and same for brake fluid unless you run something like ATE Super Blue. 1clean00 Posted June 16, 2015 Report Share Posted June 16, 2015 inspect the oil cooler hoses, they can leak over time. So you'd likely see water there. They can also leak at the seals, which would show oil. Pull back the timing covers and also check for oil around the cam gears and crank pulley. Cam seals, front main seal, oil pump, water pump, all leak points on the timing belt side. Also like you mentioned, check the reservoir for power steering fluid and the coolant bottle as well.Could also be leaking in the front and running alongside the motor, so check oil dipstick o-ring (at the pan), and the pcv system. PLANT Posted June 17, 2015 Author Report Share Posted June 17, 2015 So I did the white paper test overnight and nothing appeared on it.Popped the hood.Oil filter under car dry.Water bottle looks good.Power steering looks good.Brake fluid looks good.Hoses look good.Now the Expansion Coolant tank is empty!!!I also noted that just under the radiator hose connection there is an outlet plug\pipe??? below this was a oil\water mark and the cover(orange sticker in pic on first post) over the top timing belt has oil marks on it.So is the issue coolant or something from the radiator?How important is coolant in winter and do I need to get the Coolant expansion tank topped up as empty?I figure YES!Appreciate all the feedback...rang mechanic.....he is going to top up and pressure test the hoses to ensure no leak? Phixion Posted June 17, 2015 Report Share Posted June 17, 2015 Well over time, the level can go down though it never should in a short span of time. Not so much evaporation since the system is pretty sealed, but if it's disappearing like that, then more than likely the engine is drinking it... Possibly head gasket issue, or something else. But if it's not leaking (which it doesn't sound like it is), then the engine is where it's going. And YES, you want to keep the expansion tank topped off to MAX. In these cars, the expansion tank is where the radiator and cooling system are filled from, so I think it's even more important to keep it topped off since you won't know how low it really is when the tank is empty. Most cars are filled at the radiator themselves, so a little easier to see how full it is. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

And then in most winters (not sure how cool it gets down under), if you've noticed heat not working as well, or a sweet smell in the cabin when the heat is turned on, you may be leaking at the heater core. I have also experienced coolant leaks that are so small that you only lose a bit and it more or less evaporates, leaving some white scale marks in the area, but no residual liquid. PLANT Posted June 18, 2015 Author Report Share Posted June 18, 2015 So mechanic put the pressure gauge on and no leaks detected???Engine block is clean near the water pump and pulleys.He did note a small bit of residue(looks like plague) at the top of the hose coming from the radiator....Topped up the coolant expansion tank with water...only took a container size amount and told me to monitor level next few days.Informed me if I have to replace the pressured hose coming from the top of the radiator that the part alone cost $160AU +!!!!!!Parked the car at work on the street...so tonight will see if the white paper in garage reveals anything....as he said the engine guard changes the source location... Though I don't know if you can get it anywhere in your location without a premium on the shipping. Also comes with the lower.There used to be a user here who I saved all his photobucket pics of his car and he has the upper split made of a solid metal piece.
