SMF on M56LK with 23 splines

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I’m new to the forum but I’ve been in the swedish car scene for years, mainly on the Saab side but times change and I’ve been behind the wheel of a P2 v70 2.5t for over a year now. Im a mechanic by trade and never really needed to make a post about something, i always found the info i need thru research but i have come to a dead end today with this one... 😭

So here it is:

im currently in the middle of a manual trans swap in my 07 v70 2.5t.

Donor car is a 02 s60 t5m that came with a  m56lk trans that has a 23spline count. (Apparently rare year/trans/spline combo). i dont know if the transmission in this donor is original or not...

My original plan was to used 850r PP and clutch disk, with 850 resurfaced flywheel because im building on a budget and that was by far the best option for me, but that setup is 20splines... 😕

Since im building for a bit of performance ( 20T, green injectors, 80mm turboback and hilton stage 3)  going single mass was the move i wanted but now it seems i cant go that route...

Anybody running a SMF with a 23splines transmission here? I wanna order the right parts one time, there’s no guessing here lol, i dont have the time and money to take the transmission on and off and spent huge amounts of money on a clutch and flywheel kit that doesn’t work! 🙈

this is the last thing i need to figure out before i start the build... trans is ready with 3 new seals on, new clutch line, new clips and orings just arrived, and all the other parts needed have been salvaged from my donor car!

And one last thing😝:

i looked over the wiring for shifter gear selector and for reverse lights, i know there’s a bit of work/wiring to be done there and it doesn’t scare me...

But my question is:  Should i keed some particular wires from the manual donor and splice them over? Sections of wiring?  Just dont wanna leave anything behind before  i send the donor to the recycler ♻️ 😊

Thank guys! ✌🏼

Brick on 🧱

The clutch disc you want to use with a 23 spline transmission and an 850 SMF and PP is equivalent to a Sachs SD-693.  That Sachs clutch is originally from an 87 RX-7, so you can order a clutch that fits the RX-7 and it should work with the 850 SMF and PP.  This is a popular option for an aftermarket clutch to use with the 850 SMF and PP https://www.advancedclutch.com/product/perf-street-sprung-disc-3000204-2?gfid=p2457-c269617

I'm running an 850 SMF, Sachs SD-693, and 850 R PP on my M66 swapped 2000 V70 R and it's been great.  A few other guys have run that clutch without issues, although it's apparently harder to find now then it was a few years ago.  A couple different guys ran into issues with the Sachs clutch not holding up after their swaps, so your mileage may vary.  I haven't heard of anyone having problems with the ACT clutch I linked earlier, so that may be a good option if you can find one.

Just thought I’d give a little update..

Ordered a Mpact ‘90 ford probe turbo 6puck ceramic with springs from rock auto, 120$ with shipping, ill be the guinea pig and see if its any good!

has same ACT part number as ‘87 rx7 23spline disk..  hopefully it turns out fine! ☝

I swapped-in an M56H to my '01 S60. I recall the wiring was very simple:

1) Reverse lights: the reverse light sensor (top of trans) is only 2-wire. I found the original reverse light lead from my previous AT, and ran that to the MT switch.

2) Clutch position: this is a 2-wire sensor. I wired this directly to the ECM, but it's only required if you want to maintain cruise-control IIRC. The ECM on my 2001 used a common brand pin, which I had on-hand. I can't recall, but I posted it on this forum.

3) Gear position sensor: green/red and green together (on mine), can't recall the reasoning. Yellow, Blue, Yellow/back wires grounded.

4) Remove the AT TCU.

5) Starter: my car wouldn't start originally. I found the starter relay had to be wired directly to chassis ground (originally went to CEM for ground signal)

Good luck.
