S60R engine build

Recommended Posts

Can someone point me in the direction of what engine would be best for a swap/build up for my 2007 S60R.  I'd like to get 450 hp, but if that starts pushing things reliability issues, 400 hp would be just fine.  (I have heard these engines have no problem with 400 hp, so long as other upgrades are made.)

1) Without getting into replacing drive train parts, what is the most horsepower I can safely run?  (I'm running the stock automatic transmission.)

2) With simple upgrades to the drive train, how much more HP can I shoot for?

3) If I don't upgrade my drive train parts, is there any reason to use an engine other than the R for my build?  (I have access to another R engine (B5254T4) with low miles and could simply rebuild that with whatever upgrades are needed to reach the HP goal and figured that would be the easiest swap as we already know it fits and the wiring shouldn't be an issue.  However, if there is a different engine that can give me the HP more reliably, I would rather start there.)

I'm guessing there are threads relating to this, but both a forum search and an internet search didn't give me these specific answers.

Thanks in advance

With proper tune and supporting mods, like intercooler, exhaust, maf  turbo upgrade, you can run close to 400hp.

If you shimmed the block you can go safely to  400 AWHP.

if you are looking for direct swap, the B5244T5 from late S60/V70 T5 is the answer. No wiring is required  as this is the same dual vvt engine. Just the internals differ. This one is good for 500 hp (reliable) without opening it.

I dont know how strong is the auto transmission and where are it's limits. (I have 6sp manual)

Thanks ArMiGer - much appreciated.  So, it's basically the same engine except that it has a slightly smaller bore, which I assume helps mitigate the cracked cylinder wall issues that some R's experience once tuned up into the 400 HP range.  I saw this (https://re-volvparts.com/store/home/87-re-volv-kaplhenke-racing-blockguard-for-25l-s60r-v70r.html#/block_core-no) but am figuring that for that extra cost, I could simply start with a B5244T5 and then would have a lot more room to go up in HP if 400hp (at crank) that I would be able to get with my B5254T4 doesn't make me happy enough.  (Plus, I'm guessing there are more B5244T5 engines around than B5254T4 engines.  (I have the line on a 4T4, but if I'm having to spend the money anyway, seems like starting with a more "reliable" foundation makes more sense.))

I am planning all those mods (intercooler, exhaust, maf, turbo and tune) so may as well put it on something that gives me room to grow.

Now I just need to figure out what my limit is with the automatic tranny.  This is my daily driver and although I love manuals, would like to keep the auto, if I can.

Thanks again for giving me a good starting point.
