hgray14
I have a 2007 S60R with automatic transmission. How much horsepower can I run through it before reliability becomes an issue? I am looking to do some engine upgrades but do not want to do a manual swap right now. thanks
flyfishing3
not a ton over stock. the 07 is probably the best though. 04 05 had torque limiters on them to avoid bricking.

I get that with the engine (I'm planning to rebuild my engine and replace all the old stock components) but are there old stock components in/on the transmission that can/should be replaced out of necessity and wear? My question is at what horsepower level from the engine does reliability of the stock automatic transmission become a concern? I'd rather not have to replace my transmission right now because I'm running so much horsepower that I'm risking blowing the transmission out whenever I put my foot into it. And yes, I understand that I could have 500hp but if I never put my foot into it, I'd be fine with the stock transmission. I want to know how much horsepower I can put my foot into when getting on the freeway, passing, etc. (but not running balls out racing) and have relative reliability from my stock automatic transmission. Does everyone who builds a 400 hp car automatically do a manual tranny swap?
ckavolvo
It really depends on how you plan to treat the transmission. The first thing to do when you get a few HP over stock would be to add a transmission cooler. the TF80 doesn't like to have hot fluid. I got to 360 AWHP with no problem and even a bit more. BUT I changed the trans fluid after any hard use. I did airstrip races so it got a flush before and after. When I did a group drive on back roads I would do a flush. I'm well above that now but get slipping in 3rd gear. Need to get the car sorted out in the next few months
