96 850R bent rods - rebuild recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Newbie here... just bought a used 850R and a vacuum line popped off the turbo going uphill and overboosted. Apparently the hose wasn't secured by anything upon inspection. It sounds like the rods are bent and what better excuse to do a performance/upgrade rebuild. 😅

Does anyone have recommendation on what parts to use? I know I want some H rods as I want to upgrade the turbo to a 19T or 20T down the line. Would anyone have any specifics or additional parts to upgrade during the rebuild?

And by any chance anyone is from Vancouver, any recommendations on engine rebuilders?

Thanks!

I don't know what is your budget for the engine rebuild, but from what I see, the numbers of shops which can do the proper job in Canada is very limited. Most of the mechanics here are incompetent. As you are planning just 19T or 20T you don't need forged engine, but proper tune. Look for 2003 S60 T5 engine (with mechanical lifters preferably), do some small mods on it and you are good to go.

You won't know the extent of the damage until you open it up.  I bent all my rods for the same reason, failed boost controller and over boost.

The only damage I actually had were the rods.  Pistons were fine and no cylinder damage.  I had the rods replaced and the rod bearings, everything else was stock. It was machined and balanced at a machine shop and it ran great.  No break in either since I was running the same pistons and rings.   I was running an 18t at the time.

If you are changing the rods, might as well upgrade the pistons as well.  Then you are free to upgrade the turbo at a later date without having to open the engine up again.
