1998 NA V70R manual swap

I'm 15 and, through a deal, got a 98 R that needs some work and I really want to manual swap it but I'd like to keep the AWD. From what I've found so far the transmissions I could use are the m58 and m66. I'm not entirely sure about the transmissions and was wondering if someone here could help me figure out what I need.

What is it you're wanting to know?

M58 is 5speed
M66 is 6speed

Ultimately both are relatively easy to do, especially on a 98.
Your issue might be finding a pedal for it, at least that used to be the snag when swapping the 98s.

Also your title is a bit confusing.
Is this NA? Naturally Aspirated?   If so its not an R unfortunately.
And if it is an R, its not Naturally Aspirated (NA).

Post some more photos when you get a chance, and welcome to the forum.
You'll likely find all the best information here.

M58 is going to be damn near impossible to find as it was only in Canada and Europe. You can use the M66 from an AWD P1 for a mostly bolt up swap. Donor cars would be 04.5+ S40 and V50 AWD models. These have also become increasingly rare as well. I believe @lookforjoe did a write up on the swap some years ago on this forum.

I’ve done the M66 swap on both my 99 and 00 Rs, helped a friend M66 swap his 99 R, helped a friend M66 swap his 98 R, and helped two friends M56 swap their 98 S70 T5s.

My build threads have most of the info you’re looking for on how M66 swap one of these wagons. It’s not too crazy, especially since the 98 electronics are so easy to sort out.

As @Ihatespeedbumpsmentioned, P1 awd models are the easiest source of an M66. Expect the whole swap to cost about $1,500 to $2,000; even if done on a budget.

@andyb5, I've seen you around in a few threads on here. I've had my personal 1999 V70XC for a few years now and lost the urge to work on it as I had gotten a separate project car, but now since that project car is down, I've been looking at what I could do to my XC, such as a manual swap. My friend mentioned the m66 and m58 as options, however the m66 looks the most promising. This wouldn't be something I look at for quite a while, as it's currently my reliable daily. However, I would like to eventually manual swap it, while keeping the AWD, Gotta have it here in the mitten state.

My main question is, Would the m66 transmission be the only option for availability, or are there other transmissions to look out for? As well as just the transmission, what other modifications would be required to fit/finish the vehicle to an OEM+ standard?

Like I said, this wouldn't be something I do soon, and rather something that I want to take my time with. I have done an engine swap in my (not at all reliable, but not the engine's fault) other daily, but haven't messed with transmissions. I worry that if I were to have to replace the ECU or flash it, it could brick it or cause any other worrisome. But the counter to that being a big ECU thing would be that I don't believe that the vehicle really "Knows" it's an automatic, with no gear indicator in the dash, and likely an entirely separate Transmission Control Module, considering the vehicle's age.

To sum up, would manual-swapping my 1999 v70xc AWD be something realistic, or would it simply be a hassle compared to just buying a p1 v70R AWD?

Hello guys,

It seems like the same questions are being asked over and over despite there being numerous topics , including stickies, about this very topic. I know everyone thinks they need to know now but often these dead end and just clutter up the forum.

As Andy just statd, he and many others have performed these swaps and documented here for us to follow. There are writeups covering the different gearboxes, M66 is really your only practical option at this point and is the best choice anyway. More or less it bolts up, some work needs to be with mounts, wiring, TCU removal, etc....these are all covered extensively in the threads.

Andy's even covered this before for others, listing the threads to read...http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/166491-s70-awd-manual-swap/?do=findComment&comment=2314320 see below:

OP needs an M66, flywheel, PP & clutch, slave cylinder, etc. Plus he needs a shifter, cables, and x70 manual pedals. Both axles and bevel gear are fine to re-use, and he'll need to mod his left side trans bracket or buy one from Hussein (lookforjoe)

Here are some very nicely detailed threads explaining the AWD manual swap

DO people even search anymore??? Rhetorical question. I have an ongoing build thread in which I am currently documenting a parts build up and M66 conversion on my 1998 V70 AWD. Your only difference in your ME7 in 99 so you different wiring and ECU issues. You will need a ECU reflash to a manual tube for best results even if you get it running but I'll leave the ME7 specifics to others. Nothing you are doing has not been done before, there are many e amples for us to learn by here, please search, read, read more, and then create a build thread once you are putting it together and have actual specific questions, other wise we wend up with countless threads all about the same things with very little content

The swap is reasonable for a mechanically inclined person who is willing to do extensive research and problem saving with some fabrication and customization needed. It will not be easy, cheap or fast. Certainly much more realistic than buying a P1 V70R (in stick I'm assuming)...... There are no P1 V70, P1 refers to the smaller, modern platform the S40/V50 are built on. Gen 1 V70 are chassis code P80. There were no manual AWD V70, R or otherwise, sold in the USA either, we only got auto.
