Hi All!

Back story: I bought this wagon as my everyday work vehicle (I drive anywhere from 100-300mi/day). I originally got this car last year and to date here is what I've done:

new spark plugs (Denso)

new COP (Denso)

new timing belt (Conti)

new wp (Aisin)

new tb tensioner and idler

new pan gaskets

new oil trap

IPD HD TCV

IPD CBV with blue spring on 13T

Snabb Intake

K&N Panel filter

Bosch upstream O2

Rear is spaced out of stream

Re-Volvo 3" downpipe (Nick's welds are total art!)

Japan-a-fold ex manifold

New intermediate OEM pipe

Borla muffler

All Volvo computer software updates from Volvo

We won't talk about suspension upgrades right now.

So last month I decided to do a Stg 2 D5T5 ecu tune since my engine was at Stg 0- it was cheap ok, so why not?!. One evening on my way home after gassing up I floored it going uphill and got a misfire. When I got home Cyl 3 was misfiring via VIDA. Further inspection showed zero compression on Cyl 3. I pulled the spark plug and the electrode and ground had broken off so I pulled the head off several days later. One exhaust valve on #3 was chipped pretty good hence the zero compression on #3. At this point I decided I'm doing an overhaul. I've sourced all new in/ex valves, and all associated gaskets, new ex vvt solenoid, tb and associated timing parts have 30k or less on them so I'm reusing those, new piston rings (OEM), and rod bearings. (I have OEM main bearings but I decided not to pull the block so I'm leaving the mains alone.) Since I decided to go this far, I'm going to do a proper tune with Hilton. I sourced a used 16T and got a new Melett CHRA, purchased the do88 OTE pipe and silicone couplers from Nick at Re-Volv, refurbed "white" injectors (stock were orange) and Mamba braded turbo connections. I'm not upgrading the intercooler yet, but plan on the do88 drop-in at a later date.

So far, I decided to do some port & polishing and gasket matching with the head, intake mani and exhaust mani (nothing crazy here!) All valves are lapped and I did a valve lash check today- probably grind some valve stems so I don't have to buy a butt load of lifters! I do plan on shimming my block since the head is off. I'll also hone cylinders to deglaze so the rings seat properly and possible ridge ream the cylinders,

Now onto the question at hand!........(finally, right?!)

I don't know if this has been asked (I'm sure it has) but I have most of my engine (B5244T3) apart (aside from pulling the block to remove main bearings.) My connecting rods measure 147mm. I am eventually going to have Rob Hilton tune my engine. My question is do I really need to upgrade to forged rods? Rob's suggestion is to upgrade to forged as the rods in these engines are the weakest link (he also says to get rid of the IPD TCV and go Pierburg only for consistent reliability.) The problem I have is sourcing a set of (5) 147mm forged rods. NO ONE has them except for one source in China on Aliexpress.  What HP are the original Volvo con rods good for reliably? I'm not trying to do a wild HP build here, just something with more hp and better mpg that's reliable and fun at the same time. What do you guys suggest? What would be a realistic HP number to shoot for? I've reads many posts here and I truly don't see the answer I'm looking for (why I wrote this long winded post.) Please help me!

Thanks for reading and any responses!

Yes, upgrade the rods.

The china ones are fine.

The block will give up before the rods. Especially an 83mm bore one.

Agreed. I have been using them for years with no issues.
