Reading the OBD port of a 1996 Volvo V70

Hello, I'm the proud owner of a 1997 Volvo V70 of which I want to read several things from the computer. I bought a fairly expensive OBD scanner tool that seems to support nearly all protocols. I was under the impression that my 1997 V70 could at least be partially read out with the 9141 or 9141-2 protocol. The scanner however cannot get any connection. I'm really clueless at this point on what to do next and I can't find a conclusive answer anywhere. Any help would be much appreciated.

97 should be OBDII and therefore easily read.

Have you checked that the scanner works on another vehicle? My friend once bought a BMW diagnostic tool that was dead on arrival due to a broken wire inside the housing.

But it doesn't. This stuff is so confusing to me. The reader works very well, checked this on another car. VOL FCR works too, but I assume I have Motronic 4.3 so I can only read the other catagories of codes (any other than engine ones that is). But why does a proper OBD reader not pick up on anything? Does Motronic 4.4 have this capability? I have no clue where to continue this search.

You say "fairly expensive" OBD reader -- which one?

The 4.3/4.4 cars are pretty simple, all told, from a scanning perspective, and I've always gotten by with bare-bones $30-40 scanner.
