wrenneth
Hi guys, I'm planning on upgrading the OEM 16T turbo Current mods : 3" custom downpipe no cat 3" custom exhaust Schutten stage 2 software running 1.2 bar Making 290-300hp to the crank currently (European dynos are very strict ) I have green injectors going in with the new turbo Turbo upgrade: I'm doubting between the Mitsubishi 20T with billit wheel and the Mitsubishi 22T with billit wheel from speeding performance 20T https://www.speedingparts.eu/p/turbo-accessories/turbo/mitsubishi-turbocharger/mitsubishi-td04-20t-billet-competition.html 22T https://www.speedingparts.eu/p/turbo-accessories/turbo/mitsubishi-turbocharger/mitsubishi-td04-22t-billet-competition.html# My goal is at least 360 at the crank on a Dyno here ( remember European dynos are very strict ) anything more would be nice offcourse but keeping it realistic as these small turbine housings are very restricted My main worries are high egt off course with such a big wheel in a little td04 this is going to be unavoidable to some point. I do however want to make the most power possible and don't destroy the engine by melting a piston I know K24 turbo will be the better choice but these are very hard to find here !! And these plug and play td04 turbo's are just really tempting My question: Someone on here running 1 off these turbo's or have experience with them ? Or same size turbo from other brand ? What do you guys think is best for my goal ? Thanks in advance guys Have a nice monday
Zappo
Hello, I'm not sure anyone here has run the 22t before. They normally move to the K24 like you said. 18t was the highest Mitsubishi turbo I ran before moving to Garret turbos. However, having melted a piston while running the 18t, the turbo wasn't the reason. Do you have a pyrometer installed? That would be very helpful. You can also run colder spark plugs to help control the heat. Are you sure greens are enough for 360HP? If you have the option of going bigger, I would. wrenneth
Thanks for the quick reply Zappo I don't have a pyrometer installed Spark plug wise I think I'm going to run 2 steps colder then stock For the greens I don't actually know don't have much experience with Volvo yet I read on the internet that they should max out around 380 HP @ the crank but that's probably @ 100% duty cycle wich isn't a good idea Personally I dont think that even the 22T is capable of doing 380 to the crank because of the ristricted turbine house but I'm very curious actually and still hope some one can still shim in with some experience 😝 If i have to change turbo platform I'm probably also going the Garret route because a k24 i also have to change the water pipe the oil feed and oil return line as mine came stock with a 16T... or i have to get a very good deal on a used k24 😅
Zappo
With the Garret turbos, you can machine the raised flange off the exhaust manifold and they bolt right on. Also, the water and oil connections are in the exact same place, even the oil return bolts up. The oil feed line might have a different fitting, but runs to the same place. The biggest change would be a custom downpipe, depending what exhaust housing you go with. They also make a spacer that you can insert so you don't have to modify the exhaust manifold, but it moves your oil and coolant points by 8-10mm. If I remember correctly I was starting to go lean with the 18t at higher boost with greens. Maybe 1.3-1.4 bar.
wrenneth
Now this is some really nice info 💪 Thanks man ! Where you running a 255lph walbro in tank fuel pump or stock t5/R pump ? Otherwise I definitely have to go for bigger injectors Just the reason why I don't want to bother with a k24 turbo if i have to do modification I'm definitely gonna run a garret What size Garret are you running right now and what is your setup ? Zappo
Actually, I take that back. The greens were fine with the 18t. Once you mentioned the fuel pump, I realized the lean issue was after I upgraded the engine and was running the Garret turbo and 650cc injectors. Stock pump couldn't keep even at 1.2 bar. I swapped to the Walbro pump after that. That was like 9 years ago. I bought a built engine that already had the Garrett GT3076R turbo on it. Upgraded rods and pistons, head and manifolds ported and polished. That engine only lasted me a year before I damaged it. I race autocross with the car and once I upgrade the suspension with coil overs, the stock oil pan couldn't take the cornering load. I spun a rod bearing. I still had my block from the melted piston (a track day fail), so I used it with parts from both engines to build another one. I am currently running a Garrett GTX2867R turbo. I wanted my boost to come on sooner. Didn't change anything, but my problem ended up being an issue with the exhaust manifold, but I am still running that turbo. I am not running the 650cc injectors as there was a strange issue at idle with them. I am running slightly smaller now, but I would have to look up what size they actually are. wrenneth
Nice man 🙏 seems like a nice setup you got there ! I'm gonna buy a walbro just to make sure i have enough fuel with the greens 😎
