sorry

that was me posting on my phone

so you're saying that the plastic lens would be much easier to deflute and faster than the glass version

and that I can buy a different headlight with different bulbs because I can always modify the housing to fit 9006 bulbs

I think I might just go with the blacked out JDM's. I think it will give a nice contrast with the white. Especially with the trim, tint, grill, etc. I'm guessing that I will buy the lights within the next week or so. No big rush...especially since I haven't finished doing my driver's side kickpod (haven't worked on it for months). Exexpat...I will definately hit you up if I run into any problems. ;)

Much, much faster, I have done both. Modify the wiring that is currently inside your factory headlight only. Since you destroy the headlight in the process, it won't matter much that you cut of the bulb plugs to convert them to something else. If you decide to go back to factory headlights later, you still have the main 3-prong plug.

Hey guys, I've been a VS lurker for 2 years, and this looks like a great project. I have a few questions.

About the lenses, the plastic ones. Can I defulte the entire lense or is the raised fluting only directly infront of the high/low beams. I wish to have the lenses as clear as possible.

As for the actuail projector, are there any oppinions on the black ones such as this:

Or

Or

In about a month my car is going to be painted black and I have a black grille. Think this would match well with a black car? I don't want to look riced ;)

As for the turn signal housings and overall look, are there any mods I can do to improve the visiblity though the lense? The current style on the 850 is very diffused. Is there any way to remove/whiteout the orange/yellow reflector in it aswell?

Thanks so much for this writeup! Wonderful job.

Custom grille, 35% tint, debadged. (Not very much yet :( )

Coming soon: Black paintjob, dual exhaust system with glasspacks, Projector lights, Custom plate/holder, 18' Chromes.

You can deflute as much as you would like of the plastic lenses. If you go forward with the Civic or Infiniti J30 (recommended) housing retrofit, I would leave the flutes at least between high and low beam and around the perimeter.

As for turn signals, you are right. Once you deflute the headlights almost completely, the corners will look out of place. You have really 2 options, 1. buy the jewel corners from Sam with clear lenses or 2. dremel a set of aftermarket all clear corner lenses (ebay, vlvworld, etc) away from the housing, deflute as you did with the headlight and glue back together using white epoxy. The problem with this is that the factory/all clear corners don't have chrome reflectors, unless you buy the "jewel" style.

Hope this helps and thanks for resurrecting an old thread :)

I'm glad this got bumped back up! I have been compiling a list of needed items to do this. Looking on ebay now there seem to be tons of options to go with in the CRX lights... Is there anything special I should be looking out for that would make this not work? Basically the 88-91 lights will work with modifications? Some of them look like the have projectors for the high beams as well, will this be a problem, or can I run a regular light in there instead of a HID? I think I may go black, maybe angel-eye (think that might be overkill...) What do ya think??????

Also, none of this say HID projectors or anything of the sorts. I tried doing a search on the bay for CRX HID projectors to no avail....

edit: As I look further, there seems to be a breakdown on years between 89 and 90, this make a difference?

I hope you do try a blackened one, I've been waiting for that. From what I can tell, is the HID projectors are designed for a little more width with little to zero concentration of light in any given point (i.e. no hotspots). The dynamics of the ellipsoid and reflector will determine the width and throw characteristics.

That said, you will not be disappointed with halogen-intended projectors, trust me. the light control is still leagues above DOT headlights and throw is much. much further. I would hesitate to put HIDs in the high beams, due to the 15-20 second warm-up time. I like to use my high beams to flash people, and that wouldn't be possible.

Also, when doing black, you'll want to cut your corners apart and paint the reflectors like dougk did, but I would suggest 3-4 coats of VHT nightshades with emphasis on the perimeter and amber reflector of the corner light after you put them back together. Polish them after tinting to a factory shine.

IMO, angel eyes are only cool on BMW, but that is only my opinion. Have fun and good luck. Post threads as needed to resolve any issues as they arise.

Edit: I don't believe the model years/4-door status between 88-91 will make a difference. I think the only difference is the corner light and how they attached to the fender. You may want to go to a Honda or E36/E46 BMW forum (many former Civic drivers) to verify this.
