Che'_Moderator
IMHO, the money would have been better spent if given directly to the people who need it. Looks like one big ad to me, and we all know ad are just to stroke egos.

StickThatClutch
This is an opportunity for people like Bono to sugar their own churro. Don't tell me a guy like 50 cent really cares that people are dying of TB in Africa.

Che'_Moderator
God its still on. I agree with A dawg. Been there, donated money medical supplies, and I still do every year. But I hate people trying to tell the gov what to do almost as much as I hate the gov telling me what to do. If you wanna give your self a boner by donating money do it. Thats great. Its not the gov's place to though. They are there to keep the country safe, and thats about it when you get right down to it. Starving kids in the Congo don't really have any impact on us. Again with that said, donate money. Just make sure it gets to the people. A lot of money sent there never reaches the people. It would be like if we donated money to a project, but dispersed it all through the local pimp. How much do you think the starving kid would see? Hippies suck! StickThatClutch
People march AGAINST poverty.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050702/ap_on_...tain_g8_protestI didn't know you had to protest against it. You know since so many people are on the other side saying poverty is just and right.I'm in full agreement with Chuck these little displays are meaningless. If you really feel against it get off your arse and do something.
EMDII
Africa is a money pit. I lived there in the 60s, and worked professionally in the 70s/80s. Until we kill a few thug-potentates, the money/aid will never reach those who need it. Western governments cannot help Africans who will tolerate greed, thuggery, murder, rape, and mayhem. The Africans must rid themselves of their native oppressors. They thought they had it good when we helped them get rid of the imperialists. Now they are mired in civil war, AIDS is 1/3 in some places, and governments are pirates in suits. Bah.

Geigomatic
Huh, some of these points touch on a NPR broadcast from this morning, talking about how much of the mony from these events never reaches the needy (governments take it for themselves), some governments become dependent on "the next aid benefit" program, and some needing people become dependent on the next expected "aid' program. Interesting points, and I'm all for helping other humans...but the saying about teaching someone to fish rather than serving them a fish dinner comes to mind. This event seems to be an ego stroke...but better than nothing, I guess. The fact that we're talking about it (mad or not) means that we're taking notice.G

I did not even see any donation boxes at these events. It was a massive circle jerk for the stars. Whats even funnier is they probably all wrote off their performances as a tax deduct to the tune of 6 figures. Why is that funny? Because the same money they want us to send is raised through tax. We watched SGT Joe Mobutu promote himself (over dead bodies) to COL and then President. He raped their 'constitution' and made himself "Presidente a Vie" (President for Life). I returned to Africa in the late 70s and visited Rhodesia on a profesional tour. While I disagree w/ apartheid, it was obvious even then the Robert Mugabe was a thug with access to socialist media, who would make him look good. Look at Rhodesia now. South Africa is little better (and worse in may ways) than when apartheid first died in the 90s.A shame: both countries are beautiful, and the silent majority are all kind and gracious, regardless of colour. Edited July 3, 2005 by EMDII
