Asinine Posted September 30, 2005 Report Share Posted September 30, 2005 I was just thinking about the economics of oil production the other day.Like, the deal with oil producers is that when the price is right they produce because their costs are essentially fixed, and the market price determines how much profit per barrel.So in an $30 - $40/bbl market Canadian oil sands producers weren't pulling too much oil because it's a very expensive source (per barrel) to draw from, however 30 - 40/bbl was the OPEC target because that kept those dudes getting much richer since the oil there is so plentiful and cheap to extract.NOW.. what i was thinking about oil prices that are about two times the OPEC target from about a year and a half ago, and was thinking how much i wish i owned real estate in some place like Kuwait.Then i thought.. i bet Sadam is kicking himself for being unsuccessful in not keeping Kuwait way back when, then alarm bells started going off in my head.The US government/corporations now control the Iraqi oil fields. Bush tends to be a little too much good vs evil, fighting the evil doers where ever they may be. If it wasn't for the oil, we wouldn't be in the middle east, because there isn't anything eles there of value. Keeping the area politically stable is in our best interest, and keeping allies there.If the US wasn't so dependant on foreign oil, we wouldn't be a terrorist target either.Everyone is getting ripped a new one. Take the bus.I figured it out, and it's cheaper for me to actually drive to work than take the bus, and I'd have to walk/ride my bike 2miles to get to a bus stop. This doesn't even take into account what my time is worth, b/c instead of 8mins of driving, my commute would take over an hour each way. If I trip to downtown LA I take the train. It actually cost more than fuel. Probably takes more time too. I figure at least I won't get hit by an uninsured motorist.Driving is definately easier and many cases cheaper. I did ride to work in a couple of my last jobs.But if we continue down this path its just gonna hurt harder when we can't be doing this anymore.Nothing will change much until it does hurt. They've got some pretty ingenious methods now, even drilling sidways or at another angle once you're down, to get to other spots from one drill position.
