Take it from me, do something in the way of schooling. Talk to your parents, figure out something you are atleast remotely interested in and pretty good at then go do it. If you are like me, which it sounds like you are, then try for something that is short, 2 years or so, get that piece of paper and get out there. Most people never stay in their field of study anyway, but the paper gets you alot further than a high school education, no matter how smart you think you may or may not be. I was in the same situation a year and a half ago. I had gone to school, did actually much better than high school, but then for various reasons i ended up swapping majors, some other odds and ends and then the 1st week of '04 i dropped. Coasted until my lease was about up and then came home to missouri. I promptly got a night job in a liqur warehouse and thats were i have been since. I bust arse all week, and then am still poor on the weekends (well not poor, but i do have to watch the bills pretty good). As it is, i can't afford to go back to school and to top it off, i can't afford to quit my job and go someplace else because the pay is generally worse and there is a serious lack of health care at most day jobs which is the only way i could go to school. So i am now stuck working a labor intensive job, tearing up my body (torn rotater cuff in my right shoulder, pinched nerves, flat feet and some other odds and ends) for $13 and hour as life blasts by. Heed my warning, GO TO SCHOOL! It may not have to be this one, but do it. Do some research, find something that you think you could do and then talk to your parents about it. In the mean time go to class, do the homework and make sure those grades are decent so that if you transfer you have something to show for it and possibly help your chances of getting in. B)

you sound alot like me, Brian.

i blew off high school, but got good enough SAT to get into OU (which is no large feat). i was seriously considering joining the army before i left for school, and when i was discussing it with my parents, they told me to wait a year before i talked to any recruiters or anything. i just flat out didn't want to go to school at all.

so, i blew off my first semester and came away with academic probation and a 1.69 GPA. changed my major from mechanical engineering to architecture, and promptly blew off the next semester, getting just under a 2.0 for the spring. worked at target that summer slicing deli meat and hated every second of it, which got me to really want a college degree, however i still didn't want to put any work towards it.

my sophomore year, i pretty much blew off as well, got two b's and two c's that fall semester and was dealing alot with depression and laziness. changed my major that winter to environmental design, and started seeing an army recruiter very regularly, and started the ball rolling on enlisting in the military. for whatever reason, i balked and decided to finish out the spring semester. i worked my butt off that semester and hated every second of it. i spent alot of time laying in bed wondering what i was supposed to do and why i was where i was.

that summer, i stayed in norman and went to cc for summer school to retake chemistry. i did really well in the class, and enjoyed it, but on a personal level, the summer sucked and was pretty lonely.

i sorta had a breakdown at the end of that summer in my personal life, but i wont get into that here, if you want to know you can email me or something. i changed my major to marketing last semester, and things started to brighten up. school still sucked, though and i was just slogging through it with no motivation to do so.

last semester, i decided to take 19 hours plus a lab. dont' know why i did that, probably because i'm just stupid, but it made me work my butt off. i think actually having some responsibility for the first time in my life without my parents directing it kinda spurred something on in me. i made my best grades ever last semester, and caught up on hours to where i should be.

this semester, i'm still just slogging through alot of it and hating most of it, but the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to become more and more visible. it's not easy, nor is it fun, but there are actually some things that i like now that i am in upper division classes. for example, i'm actually learning things that i didn't learn in elementary, jr, and sr high, and the first two years of college over and over again.

all that to say, i'm not a success story, but i can somewhat understand where you are coming from. my parents have been prudent enough with their money that all of my college is payed for, my car is payed for in full, my gas is payed for, my car insurance is payed for, rent, etc etc etc. my parents did a really good job of parenting, but there are some things that i just flat out wont be able to learn until i'm truly cut free. until then, while i've got this opportunity of being able to have a free education and not work a single day, i'm not going to waste what i've got. to stop now is akin to huberis in my mind.

a college degree is not the end all be all of american life. yes, you can do things and be very successful without one, but you have got to be a really darn motivated person. a degree doesn't nessicarily open up alot of doors, as much as it keeps them from being shut.

my advice is to find something that you really enjoy in school, because if you don't, it is depressing and miserable to have to slog through it every day. this is the greatest option you have avaliable to you for success in school. also, think about trade schools, what you want to do isn't necissarily limited to academia, you can love carpentry or metalworking as much as you can love psychology or engineering.

we've got this whole world open to us basically, and are to an extent, masters of our own destiny in that regard. don't scrub it just yet. set small goals for yourself that you can easily attain, and once you attain them set another goal. if you just go into it thinking, "i've got to sit through four or five years of misery before i get something that is going to indirectly get me what i want," it will be very difficult to go through with it. take it a day at a time, a week at a time, and a semester at a time.

Brian, I don't think you want to be like me... I don't go to school (yet), I just work during the afternoon, then sit around and waste my life.

Take advantage of school since you have the opportunity. I sucked at school, but I managed to graduate with almost a 3.0 overall gpa and 2.5 core and 1050 on my SATs (with no prep) all because of hard work in the last 2 years of school...

Haha. My math section score + 30 points = Brian's total score! Booyah Brian!

And Stephen? What did you get? :) Betcha you didn't beat me.

Maybe you could try to get your degree from University of Phoenix online. I hear they sell degrees.

Four year college may not be for everyone. Figure out where your talents are and focus on them. Do whatever you can to give yourself a better chance of getting a good job in a field they would be useful in. Maybe pro school would be a good idea?

You also need to find something you really like, otherwise you won't truly be motivated no matter what.

If you can get 800+ on math you didn't take the same SAT I did.

Either way, my score is illrelevant. I was just making fun of Dougy.

I scored in the 98th percentile. Go figure.

I think Carson should be a photographer for Autotrader Magazine :D

You give horrible career advice.

I don't think he'd be that great, he'd always end up taking pictures of his own car and ignoring his assignments. :P

True that Tom ;)

I think what Brian needs is some time on his own. One of the reasons he is so conflicted is that he has everything he needs and could possibly want without having had to work for it. Therefore there is no motivation for him to stay in school.

I would suggest you tell your parents that you do want to go to school and finish up but you need about a year to decide what you want to do in life. Move out of your parents house and try to live on your own . By that I mean try to earn a living with whatever job you can get and try to make the bills every month without any help from your parents. I think that will really help you make a decision. Untill and unless you experience life on your own you will never be able to make the right decision.

I was in the same boat as you but living on my own solidified a lot of things for me. I know that a lot of what has been said here just seems talk and that it may feel as if most people here dont know you well enough to give you the right advice but believe me when I say this, Life is tough as heck and without a plan , its worse than hell. The responses before mine really should tell you what people have gone through. Be grateful that you have the resources that a lot of people wish they did.

As fas as your SATs are concerned, I wouldnt worry about them. SATs are total crap and measure nothing.

Once again, take tiem out and live on your own for a while before you decide. I am sure your parents will appreciate the fact that you are trying to discover what you really want to do before you waste any money. A break for a year or two will not hurt you now but starting your life without a plan will.

Get a job, or a trade.

Obviously school isn't your passion (not mine either), and if C's in first year are good marks, you really don't have a chance at even finishing your program.

Find a job you like, or a trade and go with that. Maybe work at an autobody, or get a mechanics ticket.

I finish my degree in economics in December, and will probably go work in a factory because it's darn near impossible to find good entry level work. Not to mention i'll make close to 3 times as much in a factory as i would in an entrly level job.

Do what you like, and don't do what you hate.

except i almost completley bombed out my first semester, and my grades have steadily improved the further into school i have gotten. i had an f and a 5 credit hour D, a b, and a one hour A(class where everyone got an A). last semester i had all b's and i took 19 hours.

not to totally discount what you are saying, but there is room for improvement and change with maturity
