Keep in mind, cleaning the TB will help performance if a dirty TB is causing reduced performance. This certainly does happen in some situations. However, cleaning the TB is not likely to help with ETM failure, which is a mechanical/electronic issue unrelated to the airflow surfaces of the TB.

Yes, I can see there can easily be a lot of confusion because the isolating the 2 different symptoms and improvements are intertwined.

The main reason I cleaned the TB is to eliminate one variable. Mine had a thin coat of oily film and shouldn't have been able to hinder the butterfly operation. I suppose a really dirty TB can cause reduced performane. It would seem to have to gunk up a lot to hinder the butterfly operation.

I also want to note that if the TB wasn't very dirty and cleaning it got improved performance. It can be from the computer reset. I realize this didn't fix anything perminent. In my case, performance reduce came back so the cause is due to something else which I still have to isolate.

I realize the problem caused by swiping fingers/sensing resistive film to sense the throttle position is entire different beast. I don't yet know how to seperate this problem from a dirty TB. Does someone know of a better way instead of cleaning the TB to eliminating one variable?

From many people posts describing their experience with the ETM repair process. Seems like many people also encountered "clean the TB to get remove this variable" followed by "replacing the ETM" through some diagnostics to determine ETM throttle position sensor is the problem.

Going though this as a DIY job gave me some insight to the intertwined complexities of diagnose and repair of dirty TB, computer reset, and throttle position sensor. Hope this info is useful for someone doing DIY :-)

Also, I believe that cleaning the TB is part of scheduled maintenance, so if youre not having the dealer do it, you should do it. Your write up is an invaluable resource for those of us who are doing their own scheduled maintenance. Thanks again.

Does anybody know where the throttle position sensor is on an S60 T? I'm not having any problems but would like to know for future reference. This is another part of the overall ETM mystery. Thanks.

Many thanks for gr8gatzby for hosting this. Here are the 2 pdf files necessary to do this job

ETM removal + cleaning

Volvo ETM cleaning TSB

Great write-up Howard, thanks much. I'm going to give your technique a try ASAP.

Only crit I have is I'd consider changing the part about cleaning the gasket material off with a razor blade. Aluminum parts really shouldn't be cleaned with metal razor blades or steel wire brushes as the mating surfaces get worn down or even cut because the aluminum is soft. Try to find "plastic" blades and if you absolutely must use a wire brush (nylon is better) use one with brass bristles.
