Well, I will likely need an exhaust manifold sooner than later. I noticed some cracking in this one when I was cleaning it up for paint. I didn't get a whole lot done today (working on pulling the sub-frame), but here are some new pics.

Pin striped fuel rail cover, same color as "R" calipers.

Baked ceramic paint on exhaust, almost killed me until I opened some windows.

Bah, CJ, why no candy apple on the exhaust manifold? Will the powdercoat not be able to take the heat?

Since I don't have a lift I had to figure out a safe way to get the car high enough to get the sub-frame out and back in without a hassle. I picked up some 12 ton jack stands today that really worked out bitchin' I then used two 2"x4" square tubing that was left over from a job two weeks ago and tack welded a 6" long 2"x2" tube on top of it to pick up the lift points. It fits right in the stands perfectly. Now the car is about 26" off the ground which should give me plenty of clearance to get the old stuff out and the new goodies in.

I hope to drop out the sub-frame tomorrow. More updates as they become available...

Johann,

I don't have a crane, but I do have a forklift that would have worked fine if I wanted to pull the engine out the top, but I want to take it out the bottom. Plus it's hard to powdercoat the subframe in the car :) I think it's easier in several ways too even though it doesn't need to come out.

By the way is one of those exhaust manifolds better than the other? They are both about the same price.

I cleaned it with some wire wheel attachments and the some brakeclean and simple green where there had been oil. It is an engine paint from Kragen, aluminum with a clear coat. The blue is powdercoated and the gray metallic is color matched the the "R" calipers and in a spray can.

OK, clear.

About the manifold, I don't think the "Japan" manifold and the R manifold make that much of a difference.

It appears as Volvo has done a lot of work on the exhaust side cooling of the head with the newer engine's. Maybe this is the reason they relocated the cyl. 1 runner to the bottom.

OK now, I am near half way. Dis assembly tomorrow and then the road back.

I am ashamed at how dirty this stuff is. It looked so clean all together.

It turns out the turbo is a 17G and not a 17H like I had always though it was. The tag on the side of clearly shows. I will have to send it out I think since all of the oil galleys are silver with babbit. I don't want to risk putting it in and the bearings go out because they had been damaged in the affair.

Mere words cannot say how freakin stoked I am. The tough part is behind me.
