quicker
Hey folks, I'm a newbie here and I need some advice. I am looking at purchasing a 95-97 850 wagon. I want something that will lug the kids but also handle. I've been looking around and I've found a couple of good wagons. One is a 96 850R and other is a 97 850 T-5 wagon. So enlighten me.... oh yeh by the way the wife will be driving this car as much as I will so.........Is an 850R to stiff to lug the kids around? I definitely like the looks of the R better but the 850 T-5 is a wicked looking car also. Also is there more maintenance with an R?? I am performance minded and dont mind a little extra work but just wanted to check. Have the R's had any major problems over the years? (that the non R wagons would not have had?)Any insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated.Thanksquicker
yangotang
There is really no difference mechanically between a T-5® and a Turbo(T-5). The only difference is with the programming, (higher boost levels) and other subtle styling queues. I am a very big fan of alcantara, and i've fallen in love with the fake suede.Someone please WEEEEEEEEE this over to Member Announcements.

They are mechanically very nearly the same car but if you want a t-5 to look like an R $ adds up pretty quick.

Ivanfbi
R is also a little bit lower and stiffer, but still should be pretty soft and luxury. for extra money you get better wheels(volans over colubas) lower suspension, better seats, sexier front bumper, more stock boost and R badge and status, i think its worth it. Volvoson
Get an R. You can thank us later. I am driving an R due to fate... I had a Turbo originally, but I guess that's not what was in the game plan for me after all :P
Asinine
If they are both the same price and in similar condition get the R.However, higher resale also should mean higher current price.I don't want to imply things about your wife, but if she is less than a good driver, count on the R bumper being turned into a regular bumper. Parking cars this large means that a lot of the times you pull in till you're stopped.I personally don't think they hype for an R is worth it, and i love my wagon, so i say 855T-5! steve1321
i have a '96 854 R. it used to be my mom's car and she curbed all five (yes, that includes the spare) of the wheels (17" Volans with 205/45 tires) and scraped the front air dam pretty bad. i've done much better with the wheels, however the airdam is still hard to protect (people look at me with crazed faces in the morning when i pull out of my 45 degree driveway!) besides that, the ride is plenty gentle for a luxury car (however i have a sedan which probably rides a bit different than a wagon; stiffer if anything?). and, yes, the seats are nice. i've never been in a T-5 so i can't compare. As for maintenance:85k - front right wheel bearing replaced (do not recall cost)100k - circuit board for dash gauges replaced ($1k, dammit!) - car was driveable (drove for about 8k) but only functioning gauge was boost because it is mechanical; no spedo-, tac-, odometer, etc.
