Federal Investigation Of Volvo

Hey! I never got that memo. If I have a '99 S80, will I 100% for sure have to replace the ETM or maybe they are just faulty in some while good in others. I've heard that there were some S80s from this time period that did not have any major mechanical problems...

Volvo has capitulated!!

ETM's from MY 99 thru 01 will either be fixed, (cleaned) replaced or if you have already replaced it, will be FULLY reimbursed.

THIS IS NOT A RECALL but a change in warranty policy.

This also will not happen immediately but over the next couple of months, however I DO have in my posession the internal Volvo ducument that spells it out.

I don't have the time right now to print out the entire document but needless to say this is great news

I'm not trying to fan any flames here, but would they be putting on a different ETB, or the same part that is known/not known to have the problem?

They already redesigned the ETM, even though this will eventually fail, it's been a better unit though.

Latest I've heard:

"Volvo, a division of Ford Motor Co., has ‘quietly’ agreed to extend the warranty of defective throttles on 356,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The throttle can become corroded and force the car to stall or slow down. The warranty will be bumped to 200,000 miles or 10 years. The current warranty protection covers seven years or 70,000 miles. As part of the agreement, Volvo would also reimburse owners who already had the defective throttles replaced. The cost to replace the throttle can reach up to $1000.

So far this has not turned into a recall situation. If the lawyers suing Volvo have anything to do with it, Volvo may end up replacing the throttles through a recall, which Volvo may end up doing anyways as a matter of course. A Volvo spokesman said up to 94 percent of the throttles could fail before 100,000 miles. Thus far, Volvo has spent $12.5 million on repairing and replacing defective throttles."

Guest VOLVO GUEST

New update, the extended warranty is for 10 years or 100,000 miles, which every comes first. The original message said 200,000 miles, and left out the which ever comes first.

The reason the earlier messages have said 200,000 is that it is being extended... to 200,000 miles. Johann, can you change the pin to say something about the recall? Otherwise, I sense a repost (of the repost (of the repost)) coming on. And I think reposts raise certain members blood pressure higher than their boost, whatever that is! :D

Well I think I got it wrong. :( There are so many corrections running around out there it's best to wait until you get a letter from Volvo. I think it's 10years or 200K which ever comes first. So much information, so little time.

  • 5 weeks later...

Wait so when is this going to go into effect? Because my parents definitly just replaced this on my car and it was brand new (the car, used but new to us). That would be awesome to get reimbursed for this. Did I read right that this could go into effect right about now (December '05)?
