My wife and I teach Korean at the Defense Language Institute (I learned Korean here way back when and my wife is Korean-American). So, we've lived about 8-9 of the past 16 years in Monterey. It is a beautiful place and I'm crazy for all of the car races/shows/auctions/etc but the Central/Northern CA politics are too left for me - Big Sur, Santa Cruz, SF, Berkeley, etc; although I still like visiting all of these places nonetheless - I certainly get a kick out of places like Haight/Ashbury.

In Sweden the tax bite is like 63%!!! They piss the working man off so much with the high cost of living, the Swedes start beatin their wife (which I don't advocate) so they proposed the man tax aka "Penis Tax", to help cover the costs and injustices to society. Like that will help!!! Seems if them leftists were to lower their tax rate and allow the folks to fend more for themselves these issues would take care of themselves but then they wouldn't be good little commies would they?

I don't believe the Swedes formed any major corporations since like 1970 or something. The cost of doing a start up business their must be outrageous with all of the Swedish cradle to grave social welfare programs. Another reason to say that liberalism is a mental disorder.

Not necessarily a Republican, but I vote that way because the alternative is not good. If 'Republican' was still synonymous with 'Conservative' then I'd join the party, but they don't seem to be anymore. The whole system took a left turn in the 60s and just kept going. Reagan stemmed the tide for a few years, but today's Republican's don't seem to stand for squat. At least in the Senate anyway.

I know of a couple of Hard Core conservative Volvo drivers. There are probably a lot of them lurking out there. :)

Liberal democrat and fall into all steretypes stated. I've lived abroad enough to know that there are better systems. Australia seems to have the best balance of social system and capitalist freedom and reasonable taxation (excellent free health care and running budget surpluses also at the moment). In my opinion, Germany went a little too far, but I did enjoy 35 hour work weeks and 6 weeks standard vacation per year. Did I mention that poverty is virutally a non-issue in these countries and guns are controlled, so personal safety levels are much higher and crime is much lower than we're used to here (on a related note, for my wife and me, China had higher levels of personal security, too. i.e. one would never feel at risk walking in a dark alley at night in Shanghai).

I could keep going, but unless you have experienced other systems, countries and cultures, you won't agree with me. Ok, back to my latte and NPR.

Seems like the likelihood of me being knifed in Britain is pretty high or at least watching a puppy get kicked to death. Many Canadians come to the US for advanced medical care. And last time I checked there wasn't a lot of work in Germany. Oh yeah, Australia confiscated all the personal firearms recently and the violent crime rate shot up.

Riddle: If a robber is checking out two houses and one has an "NRA Member" sticker on the front window and the other a "Give Peace a Chance", which one is he going into? And if you live in LA, like me, the cops won't be coming by for at least 4-5 minutes.

Again, you haven't spent significant time abroad in these places, and what you hear on Fox News can't be taken literally. Go to Australia and walk through downtown Sydney or Melbourne an entire weekend, I guarantee 0-1 beggars will ask for money, now try this in any US city. Don't argue, just go try. Also check out violent crime rates per capita in Australia, New Zealand, Germany or most of Western Europe; we do pretty well against South Africa and parts of the Middle East, but that is about it.

I like it here, too; albeit I hope to spend more years living and working abroad when the kids get older. And if I made more than $200k per year or owned a farm or business, I could justify moving to a more Republican platform view. What I don't understand is why the lower to middle income blue collar demographic refuses the security nets provided by the democratic platform. They would benefit more under Democratic leadership than under Republican leadership. The Republicans in this sense have a huge advantage with the whole Nascar bubba tough, outspoken views and religion angle to appeal to the naive, while the tax beneficiaries in upper incomes reap the benefits. I respect the Republican model for it's beauty and competence to strike this balance. I realize as long as this persists, Republicans will not be dethrowned until the population becomes more educated, but continued pulling of education funding in general keeps it going. Beautiful!

I agree 100% with you. I'm a democrat but have voted the other way in multiple elections big and small. Lack of education is deff a cause for the consistency of the Rep party. Too many ignorant people in this country (no offence to anyone) who don't read between the lines and believe what they are told on the radio, tv, newspaper, etc is always true. Hell, I think if we work on getting that poor excuse of a leader out of the white house, we could be heading in the right direction! *ducks*
