S70 Will Not Pass State Emissions Check

I have a 98 S70 as well and have had the same issue getting the monitor routines to run. One time after I did some work and reset a CEL I drove the car for 1500 miles over a 2 month period and the monitor routines hadn't even started to run. What I usually do when this happens is reset it again and drive for a few hundred miles. If the routines still haven't started to complete I reset it again. I find that once the routines start to run, they will complete within a few hundred miles, but if I have driven 500 miles or so and the routines haven't started to run, they will never start.

All M-4.3 and 4.4 cars in most states are exempt from needing ALL the readiness codes. There is a glitch in the ECU that does not commit all the readiness parameters to non- volatile memory, so every time the car is started the ECU needs to go make most of the checks again. This can take months of driving. The “smog test machine” knows these cars are exempt but the problem is the smog tech needs to choose a model from the menu and not type in the car individually. For example; when the tech puts in “98 Volvo” and is given a choice of V70, C70 and you have a S-70 tell him to choose something from the menu and go with it otherwise the machine does not know the car is exempt. I have dealt with this problem with the state of California and was instrumental in getting these cars exempt from needing all (more accurately all but one) readiness codes set. There is a Volvo bulletin as well as a California appendix addition (90 something??) about there 3.4 and 4.4 cars. Another thing I should add is that if the car will not set MOST of the readiness codes you need to reset the adaptive on the ECU and start driving it all over again.

How do you reset the adaptives on the ecu ? Is this like clearing the ecu codes ?

My s70 will not pass state emissions check because some of the inputs are not complete. I reset the check engine light about 300 miles ago and would think by now it would have enough input on it. It runs great and throws no new codes. :monkey:

I have two 98's :D . One of them has always sailed right through and the other has been finicky. Two years in a row right after Ga took on OBD testing I had to get waivers because the state software wouldn't accept a lack of a code as no code set. "Not ready" was a pain in the jerk for me. Volvo was worthless when I went to them :angry: . They gave me a list of driving stunts to do that would help it get "ready", but when those failed, they said I just had to drive the car for awhile to get it "ready" :( . I reset the ECU and drove it for almost two weeks before it was ready again. During those two years the state finally fixed their software to allow S70's to pass.

As I stated, my S70T5 never even brought about a hiccup from the machine, so i 'm dumbfounded as to the difference between the two. Also, since those two years I have had no problem sailing though with either car :D .

Disconnect the battery for about 20 minutes...should reset the ECU. You then start all over trying to set the adaptives.

I have reset the ecu five times and it still will not lock on to all prameters. both my s70's are giving me pain ! My silver one has no compression in the #2 cyl and Im looking for a engine to swap out. volvo heads are such a pain that it is just easer to put a pull-out engine ;) I think I'm going to buy a salavage t5 from verastar auctions

This worked very well !!! What a pain in the a$$ trying to get the car to store codes. I made alot of new friends here in Atlanta driving 2000 RPM on the hwy. But it worked well. Thank you very much :D

Seamus, could any Test Only Smog station do this exemption ? I brought my car to one and they said that I need to call the California DMV REFEREE and explain my situation. Thanks!
