Uncle Boost
I have several questions about a Super 60 Turbo I have just aquired. I own a 96 855 R. It has the stock turbo on it now which is great. Will I need to make any mods to this Super 60 turbo to install it?How much more power will I get and how is the Boost curve compared to what in the car now?Is the Super 60 more of a top end turbo or low end torque?I was told The turbo has a "super 60" compressor wheel, so that makes it a td04hl super 60. it is not a 15g, 16t, 18t, or 19t it is a super 60.<-------Direct quote of what i was told.Is this a decent turbo?thanks in advance.UB
Mogatu'r
Nice, so is that the Super60? in the above pic ^^^^? I played with one once and it is still in the shop, I've experienced first hand what it would do in a 5 cyl and it pulled hard just waiting on the right car to go to. It flows a bit less than a 19T in a compressor map but in reality the size of the wheel is bigger than the 19T giving you power at the top end of the RPM's. The positive side of that is adding power while the engine is reving harder is not a bad thing for these engines, the problems is a lot of power at lower RPM will kill your rods, either way you should do down pipe and a good map for this application and you'll see very good power, put it on and let us know how it goes. TorqueSteer
The super 60 is a nice compressor wheel but remember that you still have the td04 exhaust wheel which is causing alot of backpressure buildup and excess heat. Thats why Im not a fan of the Td04hl-19t, same thing, your having a large compressor wheel making the power, but you have the exhaust path confined by the small td04 exhaust wheel. So your going to need some careful tuning to ensure that you dont bend rods from excess heat and detonation, if you really want a nice upgrade, see if you can swap out the exhaust wheel/housing for something larger like a Td05

Uncle Boost
Thanks for the info. I recently had a problem with TOO MUCH Boost...Whoa! The needle was Pegging on the Gauge and when I would "Get on it" a bit...I figured the Waste gate wasn't doing its thing so I began checking the hoses and found them...ALL of them to be weathered and Brittle as H3LL....The one that went to the Wastegate was cracked. Replaced them with Silicon hoses fixed the problem....The boost was so overwhelming the engine would flutter and skip on Heavy accelleration. It never set a code in the ECU Though and that also puzzled me. Shouldn't you get a code if you have too much boost? My 94 855 did. I guess the 96 855 R's are different to some extent.??? anybody know?I am gonna give this super 60 a go one day when I have some spare time. I also just aquired another 850 turbo engine for rebuilding so when mine Craps out ...(* 245kmiles on it now) I will have one to drop right in.Where is the best place to get a rebuild kit like Rings, Bearings, Gaskets etc.??thanks-= UB =-
matt1122
I had a Super 60 in my first T-5R. It never bent a rod, but it pulled like a ... well I won't exaggerate it, it was nice though. Unless you're doing a conversion *on* the turbo it's an easy mod, and the 18PSI chips actually work kind of well with it from my experience. JHEIII874T5M
I'd junk that conical outlet exhaust housing and put at least a straight outlet on there.Especially since your 97 came with a straight outlet anyways.

FIORE
i to have wondered about this....FIORE has one on his car maybe he'll chime inIt hasnt been on the car for a while but it recently returned with my cylinder head from the machince shop. Its nice option for those who dont want an 18t-19t and the hassle of new injectors and 20 remaps later to get it running right. I ran it on an UPsolute chip w/15psi map, boost controller at 17psi, on the stock injectors with no problems. I dont drag my car or beat it on it all that much so I wasnt worried about blowing anything up. The only snafu I had with it was since mine is conical flange I had to get a new downpipe. It definitely pulls harder than my stock 15g thats on the car now. Its freshly rebuilt, lightly ported and clean. I hope to get it back on the car soon.
