B5234ft Buildup?

Recommended Posts

I sort of stumbled across a high mileage (225k) B5234FT for around 500 bucks.

The plan right now would be to buy it, tear it down completely, replace the rods, pistons, do a little head work and such, maybe upgrade the turbo and drop it in once i get a M56.

Then again, i found several engines from junkyards with about 85-100k miles on them, running condition for 1200-1500. If i would go with one of those engines, i would simply drop them in stock, and wait a few months until i start upgrading.

So, now to the actual question. Do you think i should get the high-mileage engine and rebuild it, or get a lower mileage one and leave it stock for now?

Appreciate all the input.

1200-1500 for a high mileage used engine like that? That seems a little expensive. It depends on how long you want to have the car for and if you want to invest that much extra money into a fully built motor. And it also depends on how much power you want to make. The stock engine with correct tuning and an m56 (less boost spikes than auto) can hold from 300-350ish? wheel hp. If your actually making this power, it makes for a pretty Darn fast car for a daily driver.

The high mileage one (225k) i can get for 500 bucks, the other ones are for 12-1400.

Exactly because of the fact that the stock internals can support around 400-450 hp (rods are the sketchy part :P ) i'm torn. However, i think i would rebuild either engine at some point, no matter what. In the end, i think it owuld be cheaper to get the 500 dollar one, completely tear it down, and drop it in with the M56 and have a bullet proof engine for a long time.

Greatly appreciate your input guys.

I hate it when people know how to make good engines :P

If the 500 bucks engine is ok and running you can use it. You will replace all the worn out parts and just buy over dimension pistons to get new surface in the cylinders.

The valves are probably ok and maybe you need new valve "guides".

Hi there,is it possible that the engine may have high oil consumption from worn valve guides?

If smoke comes out from the dipstick must be the rings 99%?Your turbo is it from truck?

VOLVO FH12(truck) has HX55 and HX50.

Jupp, truck turbo. Wroooom.... :) Maybe the crank vent is sealed? Try to remove the plastic canister and clean it.

I have already done this before, but no difference. Can it be from a piston failure?I've changed the rings but not the pistons.

Did you hone the cylinders before installing the rings?

Did you change rings because they were broken or only worn?

Can you explain me please what hone means with other words?my english are not so improved!!!

I changed them because my engine since I bought it had high oil consumption, and I thought to do a refresh.the upper rings had marks that gases were over it(they were black).

You make make the surface "non shiny" with honing stones or a fine sand paper. This make the oil stick to the cylinder wall.

Ah, ok. Hard call, maybe worn down cylinders, maybe bad oil before?

As I saw the cylinders were OK.But if you hone the cylinders it will last for many km?I love my car but I am really dissapointed from it concerning the oil consumption.I was thinking to do other modifications when I took it(S60R rims, change the leather seats with new, turbo etc.....)but now I have to open the engine's internals again.

and the other strange is that it has very, very good performance.
