Check where your wires enter the top fuel pump like Alvin said. ;)

I have a car in The same MY. Can you attach a pic to show it. It's leaking from where? sometime if you overfill it, there is a drain that let the gas evacuate without ruin the paint.

Anyway, please show some pics.

Whew! Smells like gasoline in here: everyone and their grandma has a leaking something!

Pull back the carpeting in your trunk. In the righthand rear corner of the trunk (near passenger side rear seat back) is an access panel with three or four metric nuts in it. Remove them and the metal plate they hold down. Take a deep breath of fresh air and get your head near there. If it reeks of gasoline (tank full or empty, doesn't matter) your leak is at the seals for the wires on the fuel pump. Unfortunately, the only fix is replacing the entire pump (you can't just replace the insert), at about $270.

Otherwise, top off your tank and peek under the fender at the fuel neck. You'll see gas seepage there if it's leaking at the neck. 99% of the time it's the fuel pump seal though. Volvo used stuff to seal it that gets old and rots after a while.

I had the gas leak after filling up also. It was leaking from where the wires on top enter the fuel pump assembly.

With advice from Alvin I cleaned out the small cavity where the wires enter the fuel pump assembly on the top(the old sealing material was decayed). I filled it in with Seal-All from Walmart(also Autozone) and the leak was solved. Cost about $3.00 for a tube of Seal-All.

Mine was leaking before I brought it into the dealer.

That's where it leaks. I actually have a military-grade epoxy, and was waiting to see if someone got the "glue" fix to work. Now that I know, I'm doing it this weekend. Thanks for taking the point on that one, James!

A LOT of people that have gone in for the recall had had the fillup leaking start.

My take on it - they lower the tank on the opposite side to do the inspection/fix, creating pressure on the filler neck seal by cocking it at an extreme angle. I dropped my take recently and when I removed the filler neck I found that it's a ball valve similar to the stock exhaust. I can see how cocking it an an angle will cause the seal to leak.

You probably would never get a dealer to admit they caused it to leak though.

Let alone convince them your diagnosis is correct. I've tried that: it's like teaching calculus to a :monkey: . They don't listen, don't care and just smile a lot at you.

The dealer told me the "tank had to be dropped and a hose replaced" to fix the gas leak I had. Wrong, wrong, wrong. It was decayed sealing compound where the wires enter the fuel pump assembly as stated. Fixed with Seal-All.

First of all, the tank is NOT MOVED IN ANY WAY when preforming the recall...they just put some dampers on there and cut the heat shield...

they did not create your leak if its leaking from anywhere BUT the 4 bosses that the screws go into.

oh....and all of you are sucka's, there is no real problem...they just want you to go to the dealer so they can sell you some work! recall schmecall

ok, so i was kidding on the last part.

i did on once that my service manager made me replace a good fuel tank because the fuel pump cap was loose....i was pissed. the customer had a fuel pump replaced at another shop recently.....

Ah, the voice of reason! :)

...but it seems that a Volvo-Recall-Conspiracy is more interesting, though :pizza:

my car is def leaking from pump seal.

anyone feel like spelling out where to attempt to seal this?

I assume around where the wires enter the unit, do I put the sealer all over or just around the wires? Or somewhere else like the inside of the rim where there is a gap almost where an o-ring should be.

Thx for all the help.

:D

Where the wires enter the top of the fuel pump assembly in this pic is where I cleaned out the cavity and put the Seal-All in. I pulled out the fuel pump assembly to do this. I also put in a new seal that I got from the dealer for about $5.

I have never seen one leak from the wires but I see them leak from the black rubber seal around the pump frequently. When they leak they fill the cavity where the hoses and wires enter the pump holder (The white plastic thing). Sometimes just tightening the black ring will stop the leak other times it was assembled carelessly and the seal did not end up in the correct spot and was damaged. Check the ring. If it is tight remove it and inspect the seal.

Do your homework Seamus and dont start crying again about your so called "contradiction". Its common for the leak to also come from where the wires enter the top when the material there is decayed. It seems like anytime someone knows more about a problem than you , you want to cause trouble.
