Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Franklin tn. has it for $25 and O'reilly has it for $15. Darrell Waltrip is 30 miles form my house and O'reilly is 13. Where do you think I'm going? Please tell me it is o.k. to buyt this from O'reilly. Also, when I get old axle and seal out will it leak ATF until I get new one in?

You will leak little fluid once you pull the axle, although some here have said they didn't. Both my cars did from both sides. Better to have your oil catch pan under there just in case. I have only replaced one seal, on the passenger side (like you). When I pulled that seal I lost a considerable amount of fluid ... maybe on the order of 1.5 to 2 quarts.

this is the seal from O'reilly, does it look like the right one? Also, they didn't have the hub puller but gave me this other thing (I think it is a gear puller) and said it would work fine also. Anyone ever used something like that? The other pic is my assistant mechanic but I can't get him to do anything because he is always chewing on his hands or fingers! :P

May sure the seal fits before you rip out the old one. After you get the axle out, hold the new seal up to the old one still in the transaxle and see if the OD matches up. Then fit the new one over the axle to make sure the ID fits. You may be able to use that puller by turning the jaws around so they'll fit over the edge of the hub. Usually the puller you want to use bolts up to the hub. See link below.

One more thing you may not be aware of: after you get the puller mounted and you get a fair amount of tension on the axle shaft, you will need to give the center bolt on the puller a wack with a large hammer and then take up more tension on the axle. Repeat until the axle breaks free.

The puller worked great, I just turned the arms around and it pushed the axle right out. Man, it sure is rusty&dirty in the wheel bearing where the axle spline goes. What is a good way to clean that out? Now I am off to try and get the axle out of the tranny. This is the part I'm kind of freaked out on. Once I get the support bearing loose can I just jerk it out or do I need to pry it out? When I bought the seal at O'reilly the guy behind the counter acted like it was just a near impossible thing to do. He said man you are gonna mess something up real bad if not careful. I said thanks a lot, have you heard of Volvospeed? And he said what? I said thats what I thought, that is my ace in the hole no thanks to guys like you! :P

O.K. either God is smiling on me or something is wrong. I took the two bearing support bolts out and the bracket off. Then I just ever so slightly wiggled the axle and it just came right out. That is good? right! No fluid is coming out either, so should I not replace the seal? Of course something has to go kind of wrong. I just checked the seal I got from O'reilly, doesn't fit! wrong one. That is what I get for trying to save a few bucks and miles. Now I am off to Darrell Waltrip Volvo to get the right seal.

Do I need to put metal adhesive on splines that go into hub?

and - nothing on the axle that goes in to tranny?

if yes on the hub, what kind?

lastly, can i clean hub with soft wire brush? or should I use something else?

thanks

Marciano: there's nothing unusual; the RH axle is held in place by the bearing and has no clip. It is supposed to just slide right out. Clean it up as best you can and give it a light coating of grease before you reinstall it.

To Guest: yes you can use a wire brush. DO NOT use metal adhesive on the wheel bearing end unless you never want to take it apart again. I know Volvo says to do it, but even the Volvo techs don't use it. Use grease on the wheel bearing end and nothing on the transaxle end.

May be too late but I don't think you need to worry about replacing the seal. I did mine awhile back and all has been well w/out the replacement. As Mr. Winkey said (paraphrasing) he's never had to replace a tranny axle seal in however many years he's been a pro working on volvos.

My 855 is in Volvo garage now to replace the passenger tranny seal with 160k miles in the odometer. I asked them to replace both sides, just in case.
