My 855 is in Volvo garage now to replace the passenger tranny seal with 160k miles in the odometer. I asked them to replace both sides, just in case.

Ching-Ho Cheng

since I have the axle out I'm gonna replace it, might as well.

Since it is the passenger side, you will need to release the center bearing on the shaft.

The only thing that worked for me to release the shaft from the bearing was a mallet. The puller just couldn't break the sealer that Volvo puts on the splines.

I didn't think it was necessary to remove the bearing from the shaft, did yours not come with one?

You will leak little fluid once you pull the axle, although some here have said they didn't. Both my cars did from both sides. Better to have your oil catch pan under there just in case. I have only replaced one seal, on the passenger side (like you). When I pulled that seal I lost a considerable amount of fluid ... maybe on the order of 1.5 to 2 quarts.

Leaking fluid is a sign of a bad seal. If you're leaking fluid, you need to replace it. MAKE SURE TO FILL THE SPRING SIDE WITH SILICONE PASTE!!!! it helps hold the spring in.

you didn't answer anything?

He usually doesn't. Just dumb post-whoring.

Well wait a sec, what I was trying to say is that it's okay for there to be some fluid leakage when you pull the axle out of tranny ... and when you pull the seal it will leak even more. That's with good seals.

Like a little fluid gush and then nothing else? Funny... I replaced a seal that was seeping with the axle in:

When I pulled the axle out, it was a sold (albeit small) stream of transmission fluid coming out of the transaxle. When I pulled the seal out, the fluid continued. In went the new seal and *BAM!* no more fluid flowing. Did you push the seal in all the way???

O.K. slow down, I have the new seal from Volvo. But when I pulled the old axle out absolutely no fluid came out at all. by the way, the old axle came out super easy, just slid right out. I still should replace shouldn't I? As far as I know it is the same seal that came with it brand new in 98.

Andy ... I think you and I are on different wavelengths here B)

I've replaced all four axles on both my cars now. The last one was the passenger side on the V70, just pulled it last week ... and yes, coincidentially the seal was bad this time, but not the other three times. All four times I had fluid leak out when I pulled the axle out of the tranny, not much, just a little bit. What I'm saying is that in my experience that little bit of leaking when you pull the axle has nothing to do with the seal. The other three seals were just fine. They weren't leaking before and they don't leak now.

Yes, when I pulled the seal on V70 last week even more fluid came out, but since it took me another week to get a new seal and axle, it finally just stopped leaking after it leveled off in the tranny. I think a lot of whether the tranny will leak or not when you pull an axle has to do with how you have the car jacked up and the current fill level of the tranny. Maybe mine are overfilled?

Okay .. enough of this dead horse

Sorry I didn't have you straight, I agree with you on the fluid level and jacking/lift position.

Although I have nothing to add to this thread, I really get a kick out of your assistant! :)

Time flies...seems like you wake up one day, and you're putting seals in your Son's car :o
