' 96 850 Replace Pcv System?

Hi Folks,

Just took my 96 850 N/A to the dealer for 140,000 mile service. Replaced the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and all the other things to do while they are there.... Searched messages on what to have done.. Thanks..

I seem to be using a lot of oil at least a quart a month on about 1,000 miles a month. Which I complained about to the dealer. Plus the top of the engine is a mess as oil seems to be coming out of the cap. Also last time I went to check my oil the dip stick was pushed out of the tube.

The dealer says that the PCV system is the cause of the problem. It is clogged and building up pressure inside the engine, causing oil to go out the exhaust, out of the cap and pushing the dip stick out.

He said the pressure could cause the real main seal to go and other seals as the pressure builds.

Never really saw this too much on the message board. They said they would need to replace the breather box and hoses and nipples as necessary and clean everything throughout.

Cost anywhere from $500 to $700 based how many hoses/nipples have to be replaced. I doubt I could do this myself...

Since I just did the belt and water pump and did new brake lines, I guess I will go for it next month.

Love the car, basically all I do is normal preventative maintenance I learn about on this board.

do it yourself.. many have done it here. there are threads with pictures that will help.

i agree, it's a very easy job as long as you take your time and keep track of the parts and bolts you take off. In reality, most car related stuff is like that.

PCV system replacement is not that difficult, but it is a little complicated. Most newbies do it carefully over two days and end up saying "I did it!" and are happy they just saved $400+. It isn't like a timing belt where you have to adjust something and if you mess it up your car is ruined - you just take the PCV system apart, clean it, then put it back together with new parts. All pretty basic nuts and bolts.

As for your other question, actually PCV is discussed at great length on this board. Try a search for "oil trap" or "positive crankcase ventilation" etc. It is common and crucial maintenance issue for cars up around or past the 100k mark, what the dealer told you sounds like they got it right on.

+1 on all the other posts. This is something you can't put off doing. Running it this way for any length of time will damage the seals in your engine. I just did the system in my 98 S70. It took about 6 hours but I was in no hurry and I spent about 30 minutes looking for a socket I dropped. If you're mechanically inclined; have ever done brakes or struts, this will be easy. When you do a search and see some of the pics others have posted on this repair, you'll get an idea of what you need for tools.

FCP sells the whole kit for rebuilding the PCV system.

YES You can. I agree with others that have also responded. But first do some homework on this forum. You can find parts info, instruction pictures, and all you need is a socket wrench set with at least a 10-inch extension and some 10mm, 11mm sockets.

While you're at it, go get some new vacuum hoses too. The original ones are also due for replacement and it's so easy to do this with your airfilter box and intake removed.

I also replaced the PCV myself -- it wasn't hard. If you can assemble IKEA furniture you can do it, but it takes time on your first attempt. Could be up to half a day as others have pointed out. Good luck!

I'd like to add that socket extensions and universal joints will turn this from a major PITA job to one that's not too bad. If you don't have them, just consider them money well spent from the $400 you just saved.
