gdizzle
Ain't nothin' wrong with a lil' color in your transportation. The bug's gonna bite you and you'll want to get a few bikes. One for training, another for racing, another for just riding, etc. I'd start out with something with sturdy parts and ride it until race season. Then go shopping for a racing bike with super nice parts.Another choice you'll have to make is frame material. Aluminum frames with carbon forks with integrated headsets are the new thing. You'll be hard pressed to find some really light steel or titanium frames for a price as low as aluminum although some are totally worth it.A huge aspect is making sure the frame fits you. That's of the utmost importance.Yeah, I rode a Felt 58cm Z70 and a Jamis ventura race 58cm and I felt a bit cramped on the jamis. The felt was much more comfortable, but I still think I could have been a bit bigger. I think I may go with a 60cm. The prices on bikesdirect.com are nuts! That Motobecane Sprint is looking mighty tempting.
Spoony
I know what ya mean. I try my best to support local shops around here but it's hard for them to compete with the internet sometimes. Bikesdirect is usually where I send somebody starting out on a track bike because it's ridiculous that you can get a new bike for 300 bones. As far as their roadies go, the prices are great considering you can always upgrade parts later on down the road. I'm interested on what route you take to purchase a bicycle. Shop or 1NT3RN3TZ! Shop or 1NT3RN3TZ!Yeah... The shop that sells Felt and Jamis is brand new, they just opened 3 months ago. They took their time to fit me on a bike, and feel somewhat obligated to buy from them now, but OMG the prices on bikesdirect are nuts! For the same price as the used Felt Z70(which is an average bike) I can get 4 times the bike. The motobecane 60cm frame seems like the best bet for me. The windors and merciers don't have as much info on the w3bz as motobecane does.
Spoony
I wouldn't suggest the Windsors or Merciers to anybody who wants to seriously ride (like you or me). Mercier and Windsor had a name a while ago but they were bought out and now they're cheap pieces of junk. They went the same way as many bike companies unfortunately but somehow came out worse then most.I don't think you should feel obligated to purchase a bike from the shop that fitted you. You'll be saving A LOT of cash if you get the motobecane and you can always help the shop out by getting things like tires, cables, lights ,brake pads, and other various necessities that wear out. That's usually what I do.
matt b
I bounce back and forth between a 59 and a 60, depending on the manufacturer. I like to have a stretched position, though. You can get a Ti frame for a reasonable amount now, even a slightly used one. Unless the frame was seriously crashed, it'll remain true.I agree with Sam that you should probably rack up some miles on a lesser bike then switch to a race bike 2-3 months prior to your first race. Don't feel bad about the shop, you'll probably end up buying some parts from them over time.As for the racing part: expect some rough times and some pavement kissing, cat. 5 races are a mess. Who gives a stuff if it looks good. If it works efficiently then it's fine. The end.

European Sportwagon
They are Campy, but 170's. I have two sets, maybe willing to sell one. Those vintage 165's are tough to find and go for like $300.
