Is that an S-works? Whats the build plan?

No S-Works - just regular Epic Comp. It's a 2010 so 26" wheels which I wanted. Picked it up cheap and excited to build it up. Planning on building it up 1x10. Right now I'm thinking I'll use Shimano ZEE crank/shifter/RD. It's supposed to be good mid-level stuff and it's pretty dang affordable via Wiggle. Probably finish it off with stuff I have laying around. Already have pedals, bars/grips, headset, seatpost, saddle, chain etc.

Need to figure out what wheels I want to run and what front fork too. It'll probably depend on what I can find good deals on.

Where do you guys prefer to look for used MTB? Pinkbike has some good stuff, but mostly DH-oriented stuff, and a lot seems used-and-abused by a budget-minded crowd. I feel like the asking prices on many used MTBs is way too high, but I'm sure that has a lot to do with how insane the new bike prices have become. CL is hit or miss, with some wildly high prices and some steals that go fast. Either there isn't much middle ground average price for average bike, or my expectations are too high.

I'd be interested in doing a build, but the price for individual forks and wheelsets seems like that wouldn't be cost effective.

Travis posted a good frame not long ago, that would be a good starting point. MTBreview used to be a great source of used parts on the cheap. Ebay has kind of taken that role now.

Do you want a hard tail or full suspension ? Can't say much about used prices, I haven't looked enough.

I've been on the look out for a FS trail bike with maybe a skew towards AM for a while now. I haven't been in a hurry though. Maybe something from the late 2000's - $800-1300 plus or minus. I don't really care about drivetrain, that seems cost effective to replace later, and any wheelset will probably do. The prices I've heard people paying for bikes I'm just not seeing (used market), but I also don't see a lot of selection so it's highly variable. There's a decent chance I'm just being too cheap. But maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

...tech doesn't change that much unless you're going highest end IMO...

Plus you're guaranteed to get a better deal if you buy "old" tech. Lots of people are eager to get the newest version of whatever and that means you can pick up the so-called outdated stuff for a much better deal.

I actually picked up the Epic Comp via the Paceline forum. Mostly a road bike forum but lots of bike dudes are into lots of different kinds of bikes so deals come up.

Tubeless wheelset, all top of the line Sram components, carbon bars, etc. The bike weighed as much as an entry level road bike and was stupid fast. The high end shocks were good at only responding when necessary, and I could hop out of the saddle and hammer without the typical bounciness of a mountain bike. I kept hitting curbs and parking stops at full speed and kept on going. The biggest limitation was my courage/confidence.

Interesting, I really don't like the older ones with the shock mount right in the middle of the swing arm, seems odd...The new ones have dropped that and look tempting. I've never had much against specialized stuff, broken plenty of it though
