SRAM rocks for all things road (yes, including the hydraulic brakes now that they've worked out the kinks) but off-road is another story. I've had my front brake replaced under warranty on my Salsa and the rear just rebuilt last week. Shifting is fine though.

I knew you were an old school bike guy. But didn't realize you were that heavy in to MTB, especially that early on. I thought most of your MTB stuff was all a recently grown interest.

Shit I got my first MTB in 1987.

Ross Mt Hood.

started working part time in bike shops in late 80s.. Then almost all of the 90s spend managing 2 different shops. Did part time as a messenger in the early 90s and full time as a messenger from 2000-2006 (while working part time in 3 different shops..

while I was at the shop in Ithaca from 96-2000 I taught MTB skills to Cornell cycling team riders every other Wednesday and did a Sunday training ride/lessons every week..

Never raced XC.. Always rode in the Washington/British Columbia freeride style, just came natural since I was into BMX and dirt bikes too.

Yeah ive been into it a while.. I'm not as crazy now that I am old and have a titanium hip and have broken many other bones.. Haha

We have pretty much the same experience. I never got to ride a white bro's they were always so fucking expensive!

I always liked Marzocchi but they seem to be in the shitter these days...

Yeah the WB fork was like $699 my cost in the late 90s I had it for a month or 2 and sold it for more than I paid. Couldn't justify it with my daughter being born that year..

Marzochi up until recently was a good company. Heavy, but quality ride and build. Recently became all Asian made as far as I know. The good Italian 66s are mostly in Canada and can be bought used for a good price.

ever ride a DT?

or an X-Fusion?

Didn't know you have a fake hip mike.  I'm going metal on my right side in December.

Yep. Since 2005.

snapped that fucker right off in a bike accident. Only took me about 8 weeks to recover... But I've sorta lightened up since. Don't want to break the fake one out of where it joins to the femur

good luck with yours. It's a painful few days after surgery.

Mine is just worn out from being me.

whole right hip is bone on bone.   Corto shots only last a couple days and then back in the pain soup.

I cant wait, I'm in so much daily pain anything is going to be better.  I can ride fine, just can't run or walk, hike.  It's impact that gets me.

Do they make canes in Clydesdale size? What causes that? Bad luck? I never got the impression you were using it enough to wear it out :P

I was watching some MTB videos last night, wondering how long it will be until the MTB scene catches up to dirt in terms of standard protective gear. Most moto guys I know go full gear all the time, and the mtb downhill pros seem to be pretty smart about it. The amateur mtb crowd, not so much. I don't think the speeds are really that different, it just doesn't seem as bad because it's a bicycle, and acceleration doesn't happen as forcefully. No idea if your accident was in the dirt, and doubt any gear could have saved it. Just made me think about it.

I put new seals in the manitou this weekend and changed damper oil. Went 10wt. Now it's stiff enough for my liking (or weight). But I'm starting to think I prefer stiff. Which is Interesting, because I'm the total opposite on a dirtbike.

I blame all the volleyball I played.  I was playing at the highest levels until my mid 30s, then got into running.  I was running 30+ miles a week plus playing hoops.

Once i I destroyed my Achilles is when I got into cycling.

A lot of everyday MTB guys are not much different than BMX guys.. and they wear jeans and never a helmet. There's some insane (as in skill)  riders at Rays who only wear a helmet because they have to there.

I liked that Manitou. Always felt decent to me. Easy to work on too

I'd imago SOP is to just get a 3 ball hitch insert and hack off whichever one looks like it'll fit.

Yeah, I've recently given up indoor and only play sand now. I'm lucky here that we have an indoor sand facility, but regardless my entire lower body has already started to ache a little bit everywhere. Might be a good time to start doing yoga twice a week.
