Bike Pics!

Paint was old, faded, peeling (down to the carbon in a few spots) and the drive side seat stay was cracked. For my birthday (back in January), my girlfriend surprised me and got all my friends to donate money to get the bike repainted. Ended up costing a couple of bucks, but between the paint and repair, was still cheaper than a new aluminum road bike.

But most importantly, it's a VS relevant post - that's my old car's color, Volvo Aqua Blue Metallic (paint code 431).

Rode 25 miles in Ithaca this past Saturday. While the ride was awesome and the weather was great, my biggest takeaway is that we determined my bike is entirely too small for me. I'm selling the Kona FS and may consider selling my Felt Tri bike as well to fund a new SC 5010.

Knee pain yep, and a little bit of inner lower quad cramping. I got a deal on the Kona when I bought it, and it seemed to be the right size at the time, but it turns out it wasn't.

Road bikes I ride 56mm generally, mountain bikes I need a Large.

Oh the road bike is perfectly fine. My fitment issues and riding this past weekend in Ithaca is pertaining to mountain biking. Pretty sure the frame I have, despite many other opinions, is a medium rather than a large which I need. It could in part also be the 10 year old geometry that my Kona has, whereas now-a days the full suspension geometry is much more dialed in.

Not sure what the specs are on it, but by the looks of it you've got a bike geo and set up for all mountain/enduro type riding and you're trying to make a pedal'er out of it. I haven't ridden a Kona like that one, but my perception is that the older AM bikes absorbed a lot each pedal stroke. I've ridden an early 2010's Specialized Enduro that fit a guy about our size and my knees where in the handlebars when standing and I had to stop with the jokes every time he walked it a bit on the steep sections. It was great on the descents though.

If you're doing a lot of pedaling, cross country and/or trail type riding, that looks like a fairly slack head angle, and almost no stem? High bottom bracket too? Seat tube looks long enough to be a large, but I think you've got the wrong bike for the job.

Agreed on just about everything you said.

LBS here in Roc has a demo day at one of our semi-local trails this Saturday. Reps from Specialized, Giant, and Santa Cruz will be there with appropriate bikes for this region. Right now I'm comparing SC 5010 with a Giant Trance. My guess is after I demo them Saturday, I'll walk away with a new rig.

I've got a 2012 Stumpjumper that really fits my riding so far. Does the new england riding well. Not too slack, but beefy enough. Sometimes I wish it was a bit more aggressive geo, but the reality is most of my time is spent pedaling so I'd probably regret that. I rode a Trance for a day and on paper, it reminds me a lot of my Stumpy. Good at everything, great at nothing bike. With one major exception; it felt unstable and lacked confidence. Couldn't figure out what it was. I think I described it here somewhere. But it seems to be a well liked bike.

SRAM stuff right now seems needlessly expensive to replace compared to Shimano stuff. Something to think about when making decisions.

Thanks for the tips. I'm really riding the Trance to see if I like it more, but at this point I'm really sold on the 5010. The only issue is at the pricepoint I'm looking to buy, it'll come with a 2x drivetrain when I'd much rather have a 1x11. I guess we'll just see how it does.
