Dick Dastardly
I like used myself. While there's a real slim choice of FS bikes in the not-ridiculous price range around here, there's a lot of good HT bikes. I had the feeling entry level is all pretty similar, but I don't really have the experience to back that up. I'm also suggesting he go HT to keep costs, maintenance, and weight down. The FS bikes I've ridden, you really need to justify it by riding very aggressively. If he's interested in FS for say the $1k range, think it's worth it? I'd be concerned the lower end stuff is just going to be a pogo stick. That said, I've been looking to get a FS bike myself. The trails can be pretty rooted and rocky, so as you get fast it starts to feel like a jackhammer. $500 new will be an OK bike. Something worth riding and not total junk..$500 used hardtail will get him a decent bike. If he had $1000 for FS used would be good..New not so impressive for the money. I personally would avoid the sub-12-1500 new FS market. It'll be heavy and have cheaper parts
matt b
Thanks, I'll give them a good ride soon - it's been cold AND raining the past two days. I saw Pam's post on Online Swap Meet, that Facebook group with all the bike stuff. Does she actually ride the bike like that? Fuck, she's must have her arms wrapped around the bars to stay on the bike. She's about 2 1/2 ft tall (give or take), so no. Besides, the ad states it's her friend's bike who must really enjoy long things up his ass, because he actually rides it like that.
NEU
A friend is considering getting his first 'real' MTB. Any suggestions? His intended use will probably be power lines, gas lines, and NE trails. I'm recommending an entry level HT in the $500 range, with the idea that he'll use it to learn what he enjoys, what he needs out of a bike. Though I suspect he might end up getting excited about some of the entry level FS trail bikes in the $1k range. Know any models that he should specifically look at? Or anything to strongly avoid? Also for new, maybe look for last years model? I know my one and only new bike (Rockhopper A1 FS Comp) I got around this time of year, previous years model and saved about $200. But that was a looong time ago.
BurgerBob
Got about 20 miles on the Speedplays. I''m a pretty happy camper! The float isn't even noticeable when I'm hammering.

Mesoam
Got in 30 miles over the weekend in Monterey, did most of the "17 Mile Drive" route, awesome scenery, traffic gets a little thick closer to Pebble Beach but still fun riding. Have some footage from the go pro too. Highly recommend these guys. Rented a pretty much brand new Specialized Roubaix w/ full ultegra for the trip, they'll set the bike up however you want. I brought my own pedals/seat/cages when I showed up the bike was ready and I was out the door in 5 min. http://www.udctours.com/
flyfishing3
i ride a XL, 61,63 road. approx what size does that equal in a MTB bike. i know its not the same but i'm curious. there are a couple 15.5 for sale, but this is the only 17.5 i've ever seen. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-COLLECTABLE-GRATEFUL-DEAD-1995-GARY-FISHERHOO-KOO-E-KOO-MEDIUM-MTB-BICYCLE-/121279623727 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7P3FBU6sm8 this would probably be a wall hanger as much as anything, but just in case lol. Fudge_Brownie
I don't know road sizes, or really MTB sizes very well... but I think 17.5's going to be a bit small on you. I'm on a 19 (Large) right now, and it's borderline just a bit tight. 20 might have been just right. I'm ~6'0 with 32 inseam pants.
Mesoam
A 17.5 is too small for you... 15 would be like a BMX bike to you
quiksilver
I'm 6'2" with a 20" MTB. There's no way a 17.5 would work for you.

NEU
My Rockhopper is 15", but I'm 5'6", and then it was a little on the small side, but fun to throw around. I've upgraded to a longer stem and maxed out seatpost. My Trek y22 is a small frame too. That bike might work maybe with longer stem and seatpost. S8ET6
Ok Pros...I need some advise. I've got a GT i-drive 3.0 similar to this one, but with various components upgraded. I stopped riding it several years ago, because of a severe discomfort that I experienced in my right wrist when riding long distances (similar to carpel tunnel, i guess, but without the telltale knot). Now that I'm fat, out of shape and almost 50, I really want to start pounding the miles out again. Got any suggestions on avoiding the wrist pain?
