Manual Boost Controller Help

S60RDUDE

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 Volvo S70 T5 so far I have done the following:

IPD ECU

IPD Exhaust

TME Springs

Bilstein shocks

K&N Drop in filter

And other cosmetic mods...

Anyway my question is I want to do a Manual Boost controller to up my boost maybe to 17 psi or so. What should I get (Brand Wise) Is it safe? What else should I upgrade? Should I do the waste gate modification as well?

Please let me know!

Thanks

Adding an mbc is in a sense like adjusting your wastegate, the mbc goes in line from your wastegate to your bcs. I wouldn't boost much above 16psi with one and DEFINATELY get a boost guage to monitor it. As far as what brand to get, search around to see what other's are using and what's working for them.

So no idea on brands? I really just want to know a good one. How about boost gauge? Where should I get the pod and A pillar mount? I hate IPD's black one I have a tan interior.

as said earlier... before you go messing with your boost make sure you get a boost gauge first ! I think alot of guys use the " VDO " or Autometer brand boost gauge's. You can get a pillar on ebay but i think most of the time there not custom for our cars and usually are in black. I had to go with the black myself i have tan interior dont look bad. I purchased mine off ebay but its not a custom fit i had to cut to fit mine not hard just had to do it.

as far as a MBC i think alot of them recommend "dawes" boost controller www.dawesdevices.com . maybe thatll help ya.

APEXI is a good brand and gives alot of customization.

i've had a turboxs boost controller for over 2 years on my T5 boosted at 14psi. No problems here..and it runs great. I used to have a autometer boost guage but it looked retarded and the stock one works fine for me (the stock guage goes to 14psi). You're going to need a guage though.

Yeah the stock gauge is really effective. "Oh I'm boosting 3/4 of an arbitrary white bar with spikes to 5/6 of an arbitrary white bar. I idle at 1/2 of an arbitrary black bar." Dude, the stok gauge tells you very little.

I have a dawesdevice boost controller (now sold as 3bar racing) I think that it has the best boost curves and artial throttle control compared to the other gauges (I had a home made one, a JoeP from boostcontroller.com and a turboxs) all of those would build too much boost under partial throttle, and werent very linear, something which you want both for a smooth poer curve and for saving your motor from high boost low rpm loads.

A quick Q on the boost gauge topic - Can you take a N/A cluster and install it so that it will get rid of the stock boost gauge? I know its a PITA but i have to take the cluster out anyway and i have a N/A cluster around... Its just a thought in order to clean up the dash i suppose, you only really need one gauge and the stock one is junk!

Lotek makes tan gauge pods for 850s. Those with a black gauge usually look nice, although black pods don't really look that bad.

Guagepod is great love the pods I will probably get a Tan one finally someone actually carries it. As for the actual boost gauge not sure there have been lots of talk about gauges on here just not sure where to go. I know VDO, there is actually a factory near where I grew up in VA and I know they have a long standing history of producing a quality product so I may just go that route. I need one that hits at least 20PSI ( I plan on 17psi or so). Anyway thanks for the help to all who posted I think I am going Dawes or Voodoo III not sure which one. Voodoo Definitely looks better, has the stainless or ceramic ball bearing to prevent turbo spikes, claims to be very smooth. Dawes has a lot of tech examples to back up their claim to be the best on the market their Hybrid MBC. Thanks again to all!

if you want something that is stable and an excellent product get a Hallman Pro-RX Evolution MBC. Rock solid and can hold 30+psi without a problem. They run in the 100-200$ range depending on exactly which PRO-RX you get. You can even get an in-cabin route kit to move the head of the unit to wherever you want. I have mine tucked under the dash out of sight but i might move it back into the engine bay because i really don't use except when it's raining out to turn down the power.

A MBC is pretty much a MBC. No sense in spending a ton of money on it. You might as well chip it if you are gonna drop mad coin. You can even make your own from parts at Home Depot.

However, Dawes is prolly the way to go, its like 25$.

Don't get me wrong homemade boost controllers are great and cheap for low boost applications but don't expect much reliability after 20psi or longevity. They tend to have horrible boost creep even compared to normal MBC's boost creep. I had one from a DSM guy back when i had my stock turbo (even took it apart cleaned it, put new teflon tape and made sure it was using NPFT threads) and 1-2nd had 17psi then 3rd had 18 then 4th had 19psi. It was a real piece of work...

This thing is built as solid as they come, easy disassembled, easily adjusted. The thing is about 5-6inches long and comes with a mounting kit if you want to move it away from the turbo so you can adjust it whenever and not care about burning your hand.
