Steven Mendoza
When I accelerate at full throttle, there is a noticeable whine at the same time. It's especially noticeable if the windows or sunroof are open. I can only describe it this way: As I accelerate, the engine revs get higher pitched (naturally). However, the whining noise seems to drop in pitch. I checked for vacuum leaks and ended up replacing a few elbows and connectors that were brittle and cracked from age, but the noise is still there. Every now and then it whines under even gentle acceleration, but not often. Could this be something mechanical, maybe a pulley or bearing starting to wear out? I don't have any tools or equipment to really check it out right now, but I'll be able to do more searching next week when I'm back home. Just trying to get any ideas to look out for. Thanks, Steven

Steven Mendoza
Sounds like a Supercharger to me...I wish. Unfortunately, it's a strange noise with no related power increase.
amargill19
usually alternator whine and water pump bearing whine will increase in noise when the engine speed increases.i'm not sure tho, you say the noise dies down a bit when the revs are up? It's just the pitch (or tone, if that helps) goes from high to low, while the engine noise goes from low to high. I know, it's confusing unless you actually hear it. I don't think it's alternator whine (at least, not over the speakers), but water pump bearing whine sounds promising... especially considering the car's almost at 190,000 miles. maximase86
I have the same sort of whine, which is more noticeable when the car is cold. I believe it's coming from the preheating system, or something along the induction line. When I first heard it, I thought it was tranny related...but it turned out not to be.S

That might be where the whine is coming from.1998 S90

But now my air pump broke off the bracket and vibrates a lot when it comes on, so I know what it sounds like. I know it's not that now, but the noise really only occurs when I floor it. Maybe something with the vacuum leak in the ECC system, because I know it's shot and I get no A/C when I accelerate.

The sound is coming from the other side of the motor works in relation to how much throttle and engine speed. Definately not the air pump.S

maximase86
Definately, it hasn't been too bad since I had the IM gasket replaced. BTW, did you ever try the 92-94 cam swap?S
Steven Mendoza
Definately, it hasn't been too bad since I had the IM gasket replaced. BTW, did you ever try the 92-94 cam swap?SUnfortunately, not yet. I was getting ready to buy parts to do it when my radiator, expansion tank, 3-way/heater valve and heater hoses were all heading south very quickly. It took a good bit of money to replace all of that and I still leak coolant somewhere, but not too much. Hopefully this summer I'll have better luck with getting the parts and doing the swap, because I'd really like that extra power. And it'll yield a valuable write-up for the neglected S90/960 community. How much and how difficult was it to replace the intake manifold gasket? Also, now that I think about it, there are 6 of those little hoses that hook down there by the IM.. maybe some of those could be leaking?
maximase86
I had my buddies shop do it...though they end up goofing up during the reinstall and didn't attach the coil pack ground back properly. It's probably a few hour job if you haven't done it before because you gotta tear out almost everything on the IM side of the motor. The likelihood of the couplers to leak is much less than the gasket...but the clamps do cost a lot of you can find anything similarly sized and have to go to the dealer. Bummer about the cooling system. I lost my radiator back in september...that sucked ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD but was a relatively easy fix.S
TurboBV
Strange you should mention a 'whine'. I drive a '95 Turbo 850 sedan and having had about everything possible done to it lately(tune-up, timing belt, new tires, new CV boots/axels front), I've just noticed a whine when I turn left. The only way to get it to stop is to apply the brakes. I do know I still have a leaky turbo seal.Any ideas?
