Rear Shock Mounts

I searched the forum for replacing rear shock mounts and I see some information but not all my questions.

1. What parts should I use? OEM from dealer or FCP?

2. I get a constant rattle from back over bumps for sure rear mounts?

3. How hard and how do you replace them? Do I need special tools? I know they are under the trunk mat just not sure from there.

4. How many beers will I need?

Thanks!

1. Either take your pick

2. Most likely, try tightening the nuts on the top first and also check the bump stops

3. Very easy just need normal wrenchs and some time, took me 2 hrs the first time

4. Case at least, just dont puke in the trunk

1. the aftermarket ones from FCP are fine.

2. Could also be the trailing arm link.

3. Easy job. Undo the lower rear shock nut and then climb inside the car and peel back the carpet to reveal the top of the shock and the shock mount. Remove the 2 bolts on the mount and pull the shock and the mount up into the car as one piece. The only hard part (sometimes) is that the bolts for the mount stick down into the rear wheel well where they are exposed to the elements and get all crudded up. Sometimes they snap when being removed. It's a good idea to get some PB Blaster on them from below a few days before your remove them.

See I would really like to PM this guy but he is a guest!! GOD DAMNIT! Hey if you check this again do you have to remove the shock? Why not just do the mounts on top and call it a day?

No, you don't need to remove the shock. You can do it all from the top. My rear suspension was clunking real bad as well but the new mounts did nothing for it. In my case it was the trailing arm end links, I replaced them last week and it is like a brand new car.

Unless the shock mounts are physically broken, changing them won't do anything to fix your noise. Check the trailing arm bushings and also the shocks themselves can be noisy as well. If you want to know if it's the shocks/mounts or the trailing arm bushing, take it for a short, slow speed drive while the shocks are out of the car. If the noise is still there go for the trailing arm bushings.

Hmm trailing arm endlink that is not sway right? Where the F is a traling arm? I suck under the car!

the rear sway does hook into the trailing arm. But they are not talking about the sway, rather where the trailing arm itself hooks in. Even if you don't have a rear sway, you have a trailing arm endlink.

It is much more commonly the mounts or the bump stops, in that order, so just check them. Look at the mounts from the inside, under the carpet. If one or both are broken, you can tell because the top of the shock sticks up into the trunk. You'll see a busted mount. If the mounts look good, then check the bump stops from under the car. If the bump stops are loose then they will be sitting down at the bottom of the coil spring instead of up high and nearly out of sight.

If both of those are good, then figure out what a trailing arm is. pfeener's idea to remove the shock and drive slowly is a good one.
