0422 Cat Efficiency

got 0422 code for cat eff. new o2 sensors, new cat, no vac leak, fuel pressure good ,no leaks in freash air intak, no exhuast leaks, comes on right when drive cycle is complete ,after market cat but i've used them before successfully. is this a false code? does the ECU need to be cleared and reprogrammed/adapted, i don't have a tech five and the dealer will probably say it needs a new engine to make the light go away this car runs great but the customer is CEL paranoid AGHHHHHH!

Reseting the adaptives may correct it. If not it is probably the aftermarket cat at fault. See what the front and rear 0/2's are reading . Did you use OEM 0/2's. 0422 is set when your 0/2 values between each other are not correct. Rear 0/2 could be the cause but more than likely it's the cat as long as there are no other codes present.

New OEM o2's didn't have tool to pop out ECM but I shorted the batt terminals together for about 10min and no luck. I even placed the rear 02 out of the direct stream (used an 18mm sparkplug anti-fouling bushing) to try and fool the ecm and no luck. I'll have volvo attempt adaptive reset this week but I'm leaning torwards the aftermarket cat. Other local mechanics have used the same part with success I was told by the supplier. I'll post back with results Thanks!

If you really have no leaks in the syst then I agree with the CAT. Is this a turbo? How many miles. I have had a car with a similar problem that ended up needing valve seals. THey were caked up pretty bad and there was oil leaking into the valves causing a poor reading at the O2's. But the light also never came on that quick. You said you don't have a short to the wires correct? Hope everything works out

The car runs Great..no oil consumption and good compression. Takes about 18 miles for a drive cycle and it instantly comes on when the cat readiness is complete as shown on my snappy scanner

I have the dreaded P0442 CEL too.

Done everything short of changing the cat.

Someone on the V70R forum mentioned that it may not be a problem with the cat, rather... a problem with an exhaust leak.

I would check around all of the gaskets upstream from the primary oxygen sensor.

depending on the sensitivity of the signals that the ECU is looking for... it may be a problem (the exhaust leak), if measurements among the MAF, primary o2, and secondary o2 sensors are being compared.

My CEL comes back as soon as the drive cycle is complete too. Before coughing up the cash for a new cat, i would check your exhaust gaskets (manifold, turbo, downpipe) and all the emission related vacuum lines.

Did every test by the the book..exhaust, air leaks, smoked the car, comp temp, fuel press test, and today broke down and dropped $750 (my cost) for the cat from volvo, low and behold the light stays off and readiness is fine!!!! Should have known that the $250 aftermarket was a piece of junk Why they bother making some thing that will not work is beyond me, the fitment was fine but the performace stunk!. On to the Next horror show...Thanks all
