larryo108
I drive 100 miles a day, so I try to run it out to about 5-6k miles between changes. If I change my oil every 3k miles, I'll be changing it like every month. I had about 5k on this.I was changing mine monthly when I was driving 120 miles a day. Of course mine was mostly highway miles, but still. I am just anal and paranoid, so I would do it every 3,000.
towerymt
With good air and oil filters, I would not hesistate to run synthetic oil for 5000-6000 miles as long as it wasn't being otherwise contaminated (water, fuel, etc). In my experience, it's hard to hurt an engine, but mine was a redblock and not a turbo.

550
If detonation is equivalent to magical fairy dut... i would tend to agree with the shop in question.Greg please tell me your crank wont be balanced by them... please.

gdizzle
more pics..You can see here where the rod hit the crank.bearings side by side, the discolored bearing came off the rod cap.
J5T
Sorry about your ride.... If you need a rod, I have a few laying about. Glück.
Guest Guest_ashman_*
Really? Why is that? Detonation is very powerful.Yeah but it's usually torque that bends the rod. Detonation usually melts pistons. Sounds kinda like your situation if your AFR was ok. Dude that sucks man...Kinda scares me

Dude that sucks man...Kinda scares me Melting pistons is caused by the extreme heat caused by detonation, but either way severe detonation does bend rods. Just imagine the mixture igniting with the piston still traveling upwards, it aint pretty. You need a shitton of torque to bend a whiteblock rod without detonation. But detonation does tend to occur at peak torque, hence the confusion.
550
Yeah I can say 100% my engine detonated and the rods bent because of it. You could feel it like little tiny backfires.... but not.
lextildeath
Sounds literally like jumping jacks and you get an extreme loss of power. Any way I have 5 fresh OEM rods from my new motor unharmed I can just give them to you if you wanna save money and go OEM.
T5shortblock
What do you think caused this? poor tuning? low grade fuel? ( detonation because of fuel ) over loading the engine at low RPM, by boost surge maybe? just wondering what to look for when the GT30R will be on mine at 1 bar... I was rotating octanes since I drive so much. You order rods yet? ;)

T5shortblock
good to know, I haven't baught any rods, I'm not planning to unless I decide to up the boost, I'm looking for 300whp, with a 1bar spring on my tial 38mm. I'll be getting a top notch tune by one of the best tuners in my area, and will be running 94 octane only. The suply is close to my house and easy to find around town... I think that will be enough to ensure my rods do not bend, everyone I have spoken to who has bent there rods with a b5234 in the 300whp ballpark seem to have bent them becose of poore or lack of tuning, including you and black T5, I rest my case. The Honda and VW crowd have been getting tunes for there mild to wild hp cars for years now, and only in the volvo crowd do we see people running manuel boost controlers without remaps on there expensive engines... this fact bottles my mind to this day, loll
