It has a very clean engine, we just had that check by the dealer. The dealer had the gear instock, very popular part.

Well got it back from the dealer, and everything was fine until 7pm them the light came back on. I did put an K&N cold intake filter on(replaces stock air filter.) I am going to auto zone to get a free scan to see what it is. If its the same I dont know what to do from here. I will keep you posted.

Found the solve to the P0014 problem today.( I hope) Went to auto zone and still had the same code. I would like to mention one key symptom that I had. When the car was cold started great!!( as mention before), But!! when it was hot (driven about 10 - 15 miles, and sat for 1hr) started very hard. Problem: faulty fuel pressure regulater. How to check: The fuel PSI reg. is located on the S40 to the side of the throttle body.( under the small black cover held in place by two screws. A short rubber with plastic tube vacum hose leaves the valve, and connects below infront of the throttle body area. Remove it completly, turn it up side down tap it on your finger to see if gas comes out. Yes = bad valve no = good valve.

How does this cause the code(P0014) that says cam is out of time?? easy: Gas leaks from fuel PSI reg. into cylinders via vacum hose causing a flooding situation (noticed black smoke when someone started it) You go to start engine and it turns over alot before starting. this causes low rpm long duration revalotions of the cam before ignition is reconized by computer. VVT works on start up based on oil PSI. Long crank time low RPM trips the VVT system and tells ECM that timing is off.(P0014) If engine starts right off it creates normal oil PSI sets VVT and completes cam / crank circuit. The held machanic (Bill) (certified and proven best volvo tec in Vermont by Volvo Corp)& machanics manager at Almartins Volvo in shelburn Vermont took me into the shop and did the diagnostic on the car right infront of me. He pulled the vac hose and I saw the gas come out. Siad he had (3) other cars do this, and it caused a P0014 code. changed the fuel PSI reg. and cars have not returned yet.(more than a year now) The dealer even called Volvo tec suport for help. Thank god Bill walked over when he had the free time, and ask about the symptoms. Had the solve to the problem first thing. Went to a restaurant on the way home had a bite to eat. came out 1 hr later car started first thing. Yes !!!!!!.

For some reason, I didn't think of this.....We had many S40 had issue with faulty FPR......

Other frequent problem is faulty coil packs...

Well my hope ended today!! CEL light is on again. same code. dealer is lost, but needs me to drop it off over night to have it cold. The good news is it starts great now, and the fuel milage has already improved.

Just a wild guess but you ever thought of checking your PCV system?

how to change PCV trap

good thing vman posted this sure fix everywhere on this board, lol....i was a bit skeptical of that one...

Well Garbergtsi I will have to agree with you. Pie on my face, But thats what happens when you put all your trust, and hope in the Volve certified tec's. But as explained to me this has been found to cause this code. It seems like a lot of little things can cause this code. Who knows maybe if a sneezel pin was real a bad one could be the blame. Maybe the muffler bearing too.... LOL. Maybe you can put a post explaining how to solve hard starting S40's... The fix>> Fuel pressure regulator. Thanks for your input, and theres no disrespect here from me. I welcome you input, and info.

nothing against you, these codes are a pain in the jerk. i have to deal with them everyday and hate em. I was skeptical about the fix, but on the other hand it somewhat made since to me...

ive seen those FPR's cause MAP codes, mass airflow codes, engine RPM sensor codes so i guess it wouldnt suprise me too much....

anywyas, im looking forward to whatever they find in the end!

and BTW--typically the techs get paid under 1/4 of what the dealer charges...

Well I decided to pull the new VVT solenoid off today, and check to see if the new gasket with the screen was plugged. My guess was right, but the light remains on. The debris that blocked the screen was hard to clean off. Carb cleaner wouldn't touch it. I had to use an old tooth brush to loosen it up. This new part was installed just about a week ago. I have a question for the tec's on here. Can I remove the screen without any more problems?? The old gasket did not have a screen.

Check PCV system and the oil trap. If it's clogged, that's might be one of the reason.

vman-- it seems that your engine has had a real bad oil change history....

its going to take lots of lots of care to get rid of that problem...

might want to pull the oil pan and clean it out and clean out the pickup screen as well

Hi, You hit the nail on the head... Deal found oil filter element twisted, and folded like a paper cup. Had chunks of debris on it. They recomended change oil, and filter every 1,000 miles for the next 3,000 miles. When adding the oil replace 1 qt with marvins mistry oil. I asked about taking off the oil pan myself since I have done this before, and they recomended that I have then do it because it uses a special sealer like glue, and not silicon. I ask about using an after market gasket instead , and they say it's not available. So do I dare to take the challenge, and deal with the special sealent or have them do it. What can you offer for a tip on this. Thanks for your help.
