1997 Volvo 960 Transmission Problem

After driving on the highway for some time above 55mph(80km/h) the up-arrow on my dashboard will suddenly begin to flash; at the same time, the drive mode selector lights on the gear goes berserk. The gear shifts fine without any problem. I got the car scanned at a local workshop and it came with error code PO740.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Sounds like PNP or Trans. Mode Selector switch which you can try refreshing by repeatedly pressing through each button rapidly about 15 times. To refresh the PNP switch shift through all gears rapidly about 10 times then slowly shift through each gear. This often refreshes the contacts. Then reset the code and see if it comes back.

Also make sure your battery has a full charge, if the voltage even gets a bit low it can cause the arrow and mode selector lights to also flash.

For information on the code you can look it up on the net or on brickboard.

IINM the PRNDL switch code is PO705.

PO740 is the "TCC SOLENOID CIRCUIT OPEN", TCC is torque converter clutch, so it's solenoid is suspect. The solenoids are pretty easy to change, just drop the pan. I'll see if I post a test you can try later when I'm back in the office.

2x threads merged.

I'd try probing the B4 connector, this is located on the left side of the transmission under the car, of the three connectors there, it is the one closest to the rear of the car. With one test lead, make contact on terminal #5 (Brown-Black wire), then touch the other test lead to any of the 4 other wires in that connector. Normally all should show continuity, and all should read similar ohms.

I'd be more specific, but I'm not sure exactly which of the four solenoids controls the TCC.

Thanks guys.

I shall have the wiring checked as soon as I get back from my field work next week.

One interesting thing that I have not mention is that my mechanic has put-in two different trannies from a junkyard in the car and the code still came up. He has also swapped ECU and TCU from a 960 that did not have a transmission problem. The code still appeared. he is now of the opinion that the tranny itself is not the problem.

I didn't state this earlier inorder not to bias your minds on what the likely problem could be.

I have somethings bugging my mind though. I had the back axle change just before the problem occured. Could this have had any bearing on the problem? Is it possible to get the code from the car due to overheating?

I can't see any connection to the rear axle/differential being changed. I did actually read your posts on other boards but somehow didn't connect it to this thread, heh, don't know why when you used the same user name. Odds are this is not a transmission problem, but either a harness or computer issue. The transmission computer is located behind the right kick panel in front of the passenger door, I'd try another one.

If you need a wiring diagram for the computer/transmission, I can provide that.
